The reason you couldn't go back past 1.4 Beta is that 1.4 Beta is when the various tree types were added. Minecraft also used individual numbers for block id's instead of a modifier in later releasle version. As such Spruce and Birch are just 1 or 2 higher than Oak. Going back however these id's are invalid (or simply the wrong block if the ID is in use in an older version).
