Trying To Diagnose My Cheap S6 Avant! | How Broken Is It?

Hey Everyone,
The time is finally here. I've been getting pretty tired of just looking at the S6 sit, so I think it's about time to take a look at it. Today I want to go from not knowing much about the car to both knowing more about it, and knowing what fixes it needs to get back on the road. The only issue is the video I received from when it was running sounds like a knock... Hopefully it is nothing ;)
Thank you for watching, consider liking & subscribing for more.

My 5 cents - change the water pump and do a leak down test. If the timing has skipped or the engine has bent valves, they will show up in this test. You could probably rent this tool if you do not want buy it. Good luck with the project, looking forward to your progress!

You are quickly becoming my favorite content creator. The way you diagnosed this S6 in an L.A. Noir style, the music, the movie making, I know you're an engineer, but you may have missed a calling (so far) in film production. Please never stop. Hope it really is just the water pump. Discovered you randomly while looking at garage renos, and stayed for all the rest. Side note: Wouldn't mind seeing some of the gardening stuff either, seems to be coming along nicely...

Hey this means alot to me. I am working to get into the film industry haha. I went with engineering so I could self finance my learning and initial productions. Film is my real passion though. I've got a couple of screenplays in progress already😅

@@luukvanoijen7082 haha that's a good question. I wish I had a solid answer. That will depends on funding and how many people I can get involved with. I've got alot of learning to do first. But I plan to get a couple more short films out within the year.

I bet the previous owner, after reading too many forums and waching too many youtube videos, missdiagnosed the issue. I would do the whole timing setup, waterpump, belt, tensioner, thermostat and put everything back together.

Yeah i think so too. I'm really hoping it's nothing super critical haha

Huge discovery with that blown pump. Be very careful with the bolts holding the water pump onto the block, they can become seized in there. I broke two off inside the block when I removed mine and had to have the block machined.

That is really close to a proper James Bond intro, very cool! Man, you really put thought and effort into this! I sincerely hope that the absurd KZbin algorithm at one point gives you the views you deserve. However in modern times quality isn't valued anymore. And by the way, I have the normal A6 4.2 and if the tensioners sound like that, he was driving with them making noises at cold starts for many many many kilometers. When I first started hearing a noise for one second after start up, I drove for 12.000km before changing them and they did not substantially worsen in sound. Almost sounds like bent valves or excessive blowby. The tensioners in Germany were 350€ for mine and they are the same since the engines are the same except in very few regards

Something to keep in mind if not changing the tentioners is that they can bleed off pressure overnight and rattle on start up causing the chain to slap around. Happened on my b5 s4 and my c5 4.2 . Might be worth it to save future problems. Enjoying the content btw

Amazing filming skills Hunter, it's crazy how i felt like watching a movie, got me thrilled to know what the problem was, or could be, it had the plot twist of the water pump, and then anxious to know if it is as simple as a water pump job or if it needs a rebuild, and know I ended wanting more haha Hope you can fix it soon, and that it all works out And I still want to one day have and old Audi to work on and try things Anyways thank you for the video and hope your well!

I’m so hoping this is a big Win on the diagnosis. The previous owner intentionally made up the tensioner story knowing the tensioners were good but heard the tapping noise n thought motor was knocking, so he was being deceitful …. Imho of course . ( riding mower ftw for vehicle towing on your property ✅.. or 4wheeler but you already have the riding mower )
@HunterDirection

Yeah I really hope it's a big win too. Im sure we will run into other issues but I've got my fingers crossed that the main noise was the water pump haha

Excellent video as always, fingers crossed it's just the water pump making that racket. While you're in there, you might consider replacing the lifters; my B5 S4 lived a hard, deferred-maintenance life before my ownership, and I just replaced the driver bank lifters as one had collapsed and two were about to.
