Trying to FIX a Faulty Halogen Heater

Hi, this video shows me attempting to repair my Dad's electric heater.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.

Sir, you are a genuine star, my ancient halogen heater died recently after 20 years of winter service and was taking it down the tip when I relented thinking it could be fixed and then this vid appears... quality and genius at work keep it up :D

not sure if heat lamp bulbs are the same as normal halogen light bulbs but you're not supposed to touch the glass, the oil residue from your skin burning on the surface of the bulb shortens the life.

Do not touch the Halogen bulb surface or inside reflectors with your bare hands. Oils from skin can lead to breakage or shorten the life of the lamp. Use clean gloves or lint free cloth for installation and removal. Clean any dirt, oil, or lint away from the lamp with alcohol and a lint free cloth or tissue.

That's what i thought too, not sure if these bulbs have quartz glass though. Still good practice to not handle filament lamps by the envelope though

i remember this also... because i used to work with UV industrial printers... and everytime that i needed to change the lamps... the main thing that you couldn't do was touch the lambs...

Yeah those halogen elements will lead to burning at the point of where they have been touched and will fail sooner.

I like the idea of a "how it works". First one - a toaster. It "knows" that it's cold for the first slice, so it runs for longer than for the second slice, when the toaster is hot. Be interesting to see how it does that, for example.

Nice Video. Pleas keep in mind: high temperature lamps get damaged from salt water. The sweat on your fingers will contain a small amount of salt which can damage the lamps. It would be safer to wear gloves or to clean the bulbs with IPA after change.

how would the salt on the outside of a sealed tube damage the element inside? makes no sense, the inside is completely sealed from the outside. This is just a case of normal failure of the tungsten filament just like in any incandescent light bulb.

@@giovannifoulmouth7205because the glass tube is made of quatz glass. Quartz glass is know to change its properties when in contact with salt water and heat. It makes the glass weak which lets the tube implode.

any halogen bulbs should not be handled with bare hands( and often have paper around tube or plastic gloves included,. however these are not bulbs, they are elements so a bit more durable....my mate vince, great job, done many of these, and yes , some oscillate..

Touching the bulb with bare hands lowers its life. Doesn't like the oils on your hands

overall just wipe them clean with a damp, barely soapy cloth and the oils will not be a problem better yet wash your hands just before replacing the bulb and the minimal oil will not harm them

Only on halogen lamps with thin glass cases, like car headlight bulbs. The rest doesnt care your greasy fingers.

Personally, I Don't see the point of 'How it works' videos as that is pretty much explained in 'trying to fix' videos. I Think it would be better to try to fix more household items or things that are popular which are prone to breaking.

Big Clive does it on his channel. he knows electrical circuits and is able to reverse engineer devices into a schematic for all to see.

You must never touch these heater tubes with bare hands as the oils from your skin can cause the tubes to explode very suddenly so wear heavy duty gloves which will key any oils off the tubes and prevent them from exploding when they come on.

wtf these tubes are tough enough to withstand hundreds of degrees but get defeated by some oils, get outta here

Is the insulation tape a high temperature one? I would make sure. Lot of heat inside that casing.

Im glad someone else saw this. Use high temp tape or even use high temp silicone or ceramic isulation sleeving. That tape will just heat up and fall off. I can't believe so many people are mentioning the halogen lights not being touched with bare hands and no one seems to care about the electrical safety of the thibg

@@reverberer To be fair, the smarter thing to do would be to cut the wire. Throw some heat shrink on it, solder the wires and shrink over them. This is an ok quick fix, wouldn't want it being a perma solution though.

Hello Vince my halogen heater almost exactly the same as the one in your video was working fine I had it on full power for over an hour next thing it had turned itself off. So I assumed the fuse had went. Turns out it was that switch on the bottom for some unknown reason all a sudden wasn’t pushing in enough to make the connection. I’ve not got the Y shaped screwdriver. So I held heater up pushed the switch right in on the bottom and all halogen lamps come on. I guess the contacts need adjustment in meantime I put a small plastic shim underneath which makes sure the switch is right in. I feel if this heaters are on a thick pile carpets make cause the switch not to fully engage Cheers from the highlands of Scotland

I've a very similar heater and one element, the one used the most, didn't always come on. The problem was bad connection where end of element makes contact. Heating had burnt the connection, kind of like what leaky batteries do. The plating was knackered and so contact very difficult to clean up well.

@@Mymatevince I was just given a Kourg coffee maker by a friend. It took me 5 minutes of watching a repair video to verify what I already suspected was wrong with it. I had it apart, cleaned and reassembled in 30 minutes, working like new. Thanks to guys like you and?I, we can keep perfectly good electronics from ending up in the rubbish. I was amazed to watch some guys get a computer that came from an Apollo lander after the series ended and were able to get it operating again after 40 years. It was amazing! If they can get that operating, we can get old electronics going again. Keep up the awesome videos!

Not watched the vid yet, just thought I'd say though @My Mate VINCE it's because of you that I've recently just spent 30 odd quid on a Game Gear with dim screen, 6 or 7 games and a set of caps to go with it lol... I still haven't finished my Bang & Olufsen Beovision 8802 project yet (needs a TBA120U for the sound demod. that's also on order) and I'm looking forward to both :D I really wanted a Game Gear when they were current but my family could never have afforded it, i was lucky enough to have a NES! Anyway i had no idea they were so cheap in faulty condition (and even working, relatively)... Thanks for enlightening me lol

ex job...makes me wonder if I could manage it in future,but mine still has 1 element working,and condition overall not as good as one you worked on,so may leave it,but really enjoyed your video,and gives me something to think about for future,as I was told they could not be repaired. I also have a small fire,2 elements,and these are much easier to replace,and heat is even better,so may stick to those.ray.

I have one these heaters which functions electrically but the plastic housing is falling apart exposing internal electrical connections. Parts of the case fell off when moving it from one room to another. The point being these units become dangerous as they age and people need to know. The importers CTC Ltd at B69 3BA are not contactable.

Hi Vince ,you need to be careful touching the Quartz glass with your bare hands ,it destroys the glass envelope very quickly ,next time you should use gloves or a cloth.

Things where once built to last now they are made to break ,my halogen drove me nuts after buying new bulbs they weren't even replaceable the first set of bulbs that came installed whent after a couple of weeks use im weary of buying electrical stuff after this experience

This just goes to show how inefficient halogens are at producing visible light. Most of the energy goes into producing infrared light, which is useless for human eyes, but nice for producing heat. I'm not sure if they are more or less efficient compared to incandescents, but both technologies are big energy wasters (excepting for heat purposes, as with this product) and thank little baby Jesus for LED's.
