Thumbs up to you Brent for being a mentor. Growing up on a Dairy Farm in Wisconsin my father didn't know how to fix machinery he'd tell me to watch him take it apart so I could put it back together cause he couldn't remember. I've taught my own children how to work on their vehicles with confidence.

I had same problem of poor idle on my Honda FourTrax. Take a small wood block and place against carb body. Gently tap with a hammer to loosen carb float. Spray carb cleaner down the air box toward the carb jet area. Install new $17.00 fuel pump, install new fuel filter and ensure fuel hoses are free of dirt, etc. Idle should return to normal RPM without engine cutting off due to fuel starvation.

My Big Bear was doing the same. I rebuilt the carb, Still the same. The air idle screw that is on the bottom of carb is hard to get to without the proper tool. I just kept removing the carb enough and adjusting the Air screw to keep it running and not dieing and finally got it to idle.

It's the idle set screw needs turned up.,or the fuel air mixture screw needs backed out to the left smidge to let idle.&that miss is from valve sticking. Just add in some stp with bars stop leak that has zinc additives.,or just get some pure zinc to add into the crankcase motor oil.

It's good to see you encouraging the youngsters. So few of them seem to have any interest in this sort of thing these days. We have a local model engineering club going to the wall because it seems only the older guys are interested, and no new blood is coming through. I would bet that the issue is still the carb. In the past I stripped and cleaned and serviced a Weber carb and I just could not get it to play ball. Once I replaced it the engine ran like a Swiss watch. I hate being beaten but I just could not see what was wrong. I would try and get another carb to try.

For the engine, try running it off a separate bottle and line directly to the carb. That's one thing. And another, play with the carb's settings, clip, needle, whole lot to see if something changes (other than the obvious things).
