Thanks for the video, was modding one of these today and a linkage fell out, this showed me where it had to go back 😊

on a mono speaker, polarity does not matter in the end. but if you are rewiring stereo speakers ot does! both of them should have the same polarity or else they will cause interference with each other and cancel most of their own sound out. you might still hear something but it will be very shallow and quiet and will overall sound off.

Interesting fix. Do you work on other microcassette recorders? I have an old radio shack Optimus unit that the motor runs fine but can't get any sound.

This is the only micro cassette recorder I've worked on... but the motor is running, you say? Are the reels of the tape being turned by the motor? if so, could be a bad connection/broken wire somewhere along the line between the tape head and the speaker. Not sure without being able to see it.

On the front of recorder there should be a little hole. When uou press play you should see a tiny phillips screw. Put volume all the way ip and turn screw to the left and right. Doing so made mine louder. @mysinisterhand shows a spot in the back for tape speed which fixed my problem, so thank you!

Do you know how to change the Olympus pearlcorder L400 recorder belt?

Honestly I don't. If I had it front of me I'd just take it apart and try to figure it out. I have no formal training on this stuff :p
