Vince, when you showed the connector under the microscope well to say the least it opens up a whole new world, just goes to show the switch is quite a feat of modern engineering, a powerful console with a built in TV, you are a brave man for attempting these fixes, 99% of us would surely kill a switch and it's pleasing to see that you have learned enough to know when to stop, like you said the connectors are now available and cheap, buy one and have a go at fitting one to a dead board, you won't know until you try
@solveit13045 жыл бұрын
Hi Vince :) To solder connector don't use heat gun, only for desolder bad one. After desoldering, clean pads, put connector in place and solder very left and right big pads to keep it in place. Then add a lot of flux to all connector pins, melt some solder on your solder station tip and slowly go from left to right on that tiny pins. Finally use copper wick remove bridges and here you go :) also look at Louis Rossmann videos, he done that many times during his Mac repair.

Just watched the Lyxn video =D BTW - if you can access the pins to solder on the new video connector, try just adding flux and light drag soldering. Just not sure if that connector has 1 row of pins underneath it - meaning the only way is with hot air. I do see the dilema - it's certainly not easy to replace I think.

I recommend heating up the board from the underside like you said but with the display connector upside down, so the connector falls to the floor,
@AnonymousRepair5 жыл бұрын
Vince that connector is easy to replace ,would show you how to do it if I had a switch, I would remove the old connector with heat, clean the pads put on the new connector, solder pin for pin under the microscope , remember there are two rows of pins one under the white flap and on the back no heat required to put it back.you can heat it from the back as long you don`t move the board ,surface tension of the solder should hold the components in place

Hey Vince, I watch a lot of your videos and from this one, I think there is a problem with the backlight other than the LCD connector as well. The LCD backlight cable plugs to the bottom left of the board south of the eMMC. To my understanding, the backlight should still work even if the LCD cable is completely disconnected. Can you check once?
@Tim_31005 жыл бұрын
That connector looks a right mess where it's burnt would be interesting to figure why it burnt in the first place overheat?
@Operational1175 жыл бұрын
Possibly a short, as that can generate a ton of heat.
@Jdbye5 жыл бұрын
Probably due to one of the bent/broken pins making intermittent contact leading to a high resistance short causing heat.
@DaMu244 жыл бұрын
There may not be a percentage of faulty compared to the millions of Switch (Lite)s sold involving burned LCD connectors, but it's still interesting how those shorts spawn. Could it be a factory defect with the pins on that connector that causes it to short and generate heat over time? Could it be with those users who spend a very long time on the console and the connector burns out from overuse?
@Jdbye5 жыл бұрын
You can use that broken board you showed with the LCD ZIF connector completely mangled to practice soldering on a new one, order a few of them as it will likely take multiple tries, but it's not like you can do much harm to that board, and even if you don't succeed in soldering it on without melting it, it could still be good practice.

Replaced LCD connector 4 times by heating board from other side, you have to heat up all board slowly to prevent warping, and than focus on area under the connector. Ofc you have to re-flow pads with leaded solder, it's lowers down melting point and helps from overheating the rest of the components... for me it feels easier than BQ chip with all plastic stuff around...

Does the other end of that ribbon disconnect from the screen? You could test for continuity from the solder points on the connector to the end of the ribbon, and then rewire the ones which are open circuit using small enameled wire out of a motor or transformer or something, all you need is a fine point soldering iron, scrape the varnish off the end of the wire with a Stanley knife, add flux to the end, and add solder to the iron and have the scraped end of the wire inside the blob of solder, then turn off the iron and move the wire out of the solder blob as the solder is resolidifying, this way you get a nice little ball of solder on the end of the enameled wire (for some reason it's difficult to tin fine enameled wire and this is the best way iv found) it looks like there's only 4 or 5, but definatly worth a go, definatly seems easier than replacing the connector, give it a go man, as long as you don't short pins on the connector your good, cheers for the vids
@Mymatevince5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Reace, interesting way of applying solder to the wire. Always like to hear new ideas. Unfortunately the other end of the ribbon cable is moulded into the screen. What I would do now is get yourself a piece of wood and build a full functional "exploded" switch on there that with a bit of thought would allow you to plug in any suspect component to the "test jig" and verify it in an instance. This is a widely used technique and the "test rig" itself would be fun and interesting for you and us, also as your skills are developing why not have a schematic to refer to, that way when you find a "dead" whatever you can look at the diagram and begin to learn the actual function of the part. The " test rig" im talking about would be built by getting various connectors and making all the critical points accessible, this coupled with a schematic and your now considerable experience would almost certainly put you at the top of the game, and your skills will naturally continue to develop.

You nailed it, and luckily you were able to still see high temperature damage "resulting from some short" which luckily was not cleaned away, Nothing beats a close inspection B4 any cleaning is done. Paul would have replaced the chip and then that seemingly shorted capacitor whenever the screen was connected, and I stress seemingly shorted capacitor because the capacitor is definitely not shorted, but rather as you deducted the connector or further up the line is where the actual short is "as to me it seems That's why the connector failed as there has to be a short that you should find somewhere back to the screen, Having said that though, have you tried to use the screen on a good working motherboard? Just be careful though because if the screen is actually faulty "SHORTED" yet another connector could be it's victim and much the same scar err-Scorching.. I would be checking from the screens connector and all the way back to the screen for a short before connecting it to another motherboard.. Dropped a like Vince..
@ZaPpaul5 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes I think you are on the right lines, I did assume the regulator as that would have explained the screen. Maybe the previous owner (I purchased it faulty) had removed the screen and bent the pins causing the short/burn whilst looking for the fault with the screen. I would like to know if the caps around the regulator still shorting now the cable isnt shorting. I will find out soon enough I suppose. Anyhow, thanks to Vince I can now use this docked, which is what it would have been primarily used for anyhow.
