Hi Vince, just wanted to say a big thanks as you inspired me to try my hand at some component level repair during lockdown. I got a completely dead PS4 for £50 on ebay and after sorting out the 5V PSU connector on the mainboard that had been GLUED?!?! back in place after being ripped off probably when someone tried to remove the power supply, with some IPA and some actual solder it works perfectly and had my very own YESSSSSS moment! Hope you and your family are staying sane :-)

Thank you for this post. Because of you I was able to fix my AGS-101 board. The board is a different design but I checked the connection from the diode to the battery port and it was bad as well. So I jumped the diode and the battery port and it worked. You really went all out on this and I appreciate the effort. Thanks.

Thanks! Literally EXACTLY the same problem I had. Saved me hours of rework. Thanks brother! Also was very helpful to watch you cover down on all the chip exploration (even though I wanted to just jump to the end, but didn't) because I couldn't find a schematic anywhere and you pulling off all the chips to identify what they were helped fill in all the gaps without me having to take any off. One bridge wire on the vias and I was back in business!! Thanks again. KZbin needs a way to send people a free beer cause you'd get one from me!

Big thumbs up to you Vince! I retraced your exact steps and found my SP had the same exact via issues. (though I didn't remove the cart slot) but I didn't have continuity between the two via after the diode and the positive battery terminal. I jumped a wire from that via to the positive battery terminal and it worked! So not as elegant of a fix as yours, but I'd rather not go through the trouble of removing that cart slot. xP

I have a GBA SP with the same problem but to see how much troubleshooting you went to find the issue inspires me to attempt to fix mine. Tried the basics without success and since I don't know how to solder, I can't check for any corrosion under the cartridge slot which honestly it would surprise me since I have my SP in excellent condition and didnt find any corrosion in the mainboard at all and NEVER had any water damage. Now I want to learn how to solder and get into this kind of stuff so I can fix my stuff and why not, fix others stuff :D Thank you for your video!! It will guide me when my time comes.

@Mymatevince I need to change out the CPU on mine. Looks the 2-3 prongs that broke off were because of corrosion. I was trying to clean up the CPU using alcohol with a light brush but no luck. I know it worked before because my won used it for awhile. I ended up changing out the EM8 chip because it wasn't charging anymore and converted to a USB-C charge port. A bit sloppy on my part because I burnt the board in those areas but its turning on and charging at least now. I shot a video so I can show you. Definitely not my favorite project to work on. What would you charge me to fix the CPU?

That's what I was thinking ! What I thought (might be totally wrong since I'm new to electronics) was that some connecions were operated on the two motherboards, but those connections weren't complete. Like that : -Vince's Gameboy : Charger plugged > Charging circuit operational > Lights turn on > Broken fuse on the way > Blocks current > Lights turn off -Faulty Gameboy : Charger plugged > First half of the charging circuit operational > Lights turn on > No connection between two wires in the middle > Current can't continue it's way > Lights turn off If someone can confirm if it's correct maybe (again might not be that at all lol) but that's how I saw it.

I have over 100 gameboy Sp 's and they all have the same problem you addressed in your video. When you charge the gameboy the orange light stays on for few seconds then turns off. Easy Fix is you need to trickle charge the battery. Just keep pulling and inserting your charger multiple times over 1 min and it will start to hold charge. You will start to notice that the orange light stays on for longer time. It works 90% of the time

Great job, Vince! As expected, another rollercoaster ride of emotions. Just a small tip (pun not intended), when you were soldering the "U" shaped jumper wire thru the via, you should really be using a thinner tip to solder that bit, as it looked like you were heating mostly just the jumper wire with your wide tip, when you should be ensuring to heat both the via & the jumper wire to get a good solder connection. Otherwise, if you just hit the copper with heat, the solder may form a cold joint as it runs down and cools on it's way to the via. Not really an issue for that joint there, but could help with future jobs!

The first item you removed was a transistor Q1 labeled that way on the board it looks like it is a very small power transistor it could be a darling-ton config two transistors in one package or may be a mosfet. my guess it that the charge chip controls it turning on and off the charge voltage or current using Q1 the tab on the other side from the three is probably connected to one of the others. because the charge chip is looking at both sides of the diode it may be looking at the voltage drop over the diode loose one lead and it might not be able to sense the charge (my theory) The broken trace was under the diode I doubt that you caused that. The water and corrosion under the game slot broke the via excellent job mate in finding that one yesssssss :)
