I used to work in the fresh cut flower industry a while ago. We used paperwork called a “PHYTO” and i made it my mission to learn all the scientific names of every flower that came through my doors. Very interesting stuff. I try to do the same for corals now as well

There is a booked called “Corals of the world” by Jen Veron that might help you out, it has a lot of detail (Photos and text description). It is photos of colonies in the wild and not the best if you’re trying to identify from colour’s you see in tank pieces but still an interesting book.

In disclosure, I suck at this part too. Which is why I think it's a great topic. For your "Stumped" pile: try finding a tool know as a dychotomous key. I'm sure they exist for coral. That would be the biology tool used to catalog and differentiate species. Sadly, I can't recommend any. All the dichotomous keys I've used are related to plants, not coral. But that is the tools specific to solving your pile of unknowns

It would be so much easier if they wrote the name on the see-through labels. I assume the coral farmers know the species they are farming (?) Enjoying the eye-candy, and a nice side-track indeed! 👍

This was SO good... yeah I can get Saramentosa - not Plana - I would say some of those acros are mislabelled - the pikachu may be a latistella - I think the Indo one is and the Aussie is a Microlados - Bali Aquarium dot Net is really good as is corals of the world (the Factsheets section)- yeah Bali Aquarium has a great shot of the plana - my guess is the one on the left is granulosa and the one on the right loripes (loripes has one side smooth, 1 with radial coralites - granulosa doesn't seem to have radial coalites from corals of the world - wow I learned something today ;) that's cool how loripes has one side only with radials ;)

March, maybe you can clarify for me. I've always heard if you touch Acropora they won't grow at that location any longer. Any truth to that? I am sure if someone had nasty hands it would be the case, but just in general.
