Dave, you're doing ridiculously well with your pronunciation! Having been watching your videos for a long time, it's been amazing to see (or rather hear) how you're getting better and better with your Finnish! I'm so thankful for your videos, they were a great support while I was living in England for few years with no Finns around. It was great to see you exploring Finnish things at the same time as I was exploring the ways of the Britts. So a massive thank you for all you do! Keep up the good work :)

A small tip on vowels! In Finnish, we have a thing called vowel harmony which means that only certain vowels generally show up with other vowels (there are some exceptions and this doesn't apply to compound words) BUT IN SHORT AND IN MOST CASES IN SIMPLE WORDS: E and I can go with everything. A, O and U go with each other. Ä, Ö and Y go with each other. In this video you had seisoa (to stand), istua (to sit), tulla (to come), mennä (to go) kävellä (to walk) (and kiitos, talo, minä, sinä…). Other examples I don't think were in the video juoda (to drink), syödä (to eat), juosta (to run), nukkua (to sleep). The vowels are only grouped according to vowel harmony. So if you're absolutely certain that the word you've heard has an Ä but are uncertain if the other one is A or Ä (like with kävellä)- it's Ä.

a little help with when to use a/ä and o/ö = usually, in a word where there is an a, o or u, there can't be any y's, ä's or ö's and the other way around! the only exception is with some loanwords. on the other hand, e and i can be mixed with any other vowels. i hope you have a good time learning! :)
@lennis4739
@lennis4739 6 жыл бұрын
The only exception, except for another exception! Which is compound words. You can have for example yöpaita, but you could not have yopaita, uöpaita or yöpäita. Y and ö go together in yö (night), and it has to be the same a in the beginning and end of paita (shirt). Other examples: työpaikka (workplace), erätauko ("period break", or "intermission" between two periods of play, i.e. in icehockey) or saunalöyly (saunabath, as in the water you throw at the stove).

MikachuTuhonen I agree. Pay attention to the alphabets and ask help from Cat for correct pronounciation. 😊 learn differences between ä and a, o and ö and how to say consonants like t, p and k without your ”h” sound it (for example you say thee instead of tee)

I have tip for you! This could help you knowing is it should be A or Ä in a word. In finnish, if there is A, U or O in a word, there never (except couple expections) is Y, Ä or Ö. So it also works the other way around: if there is Y, Ä or Ö in a word, there can´t be A, U or O in it! I hope you understood what I meant and found this helpfull! For example: Istua, there can´t be Ä in it, because there is I and U in there! Loved this video!!!!!!!!!

Talo is "house", "a house" or "the house" while talossa is "in the house" or "in a house". So the translation for "talossa on x kerrosta ja y huonetta" is not really "the house HAS x floors and y rooms" but rather "in the house there are x floors and y rooms". Keep up the good work, Dave!

Little fact to help you with the Finnish vowels, especially with a/ä and o/ö. We have front vowels (i, y, e, ö, ä) and back vowels (a, o, u) based on where the tongue is in your mouth. You can "taste" the letters by this rule: 1) Place the tip of your tongue to the tip of your lower teeth and try to say all the vowels. Front vowels should be easy but the back vowels will make your tongue feel kinda fat. 2) Do the same by placing your tongue as low as you can behind your lower teeth. Now the back vowels will make your tongue kinda relaxed but the rest will make it fat on the sides. The front/back vowels are in English as well (bit different though). Say "fat" to get ä, and "aisle" to get a. "off" for o and "first" for ö. You will learn it quickly!

Quick tip for vowels: Finnish has so called front, neutral and back vowels. A, U, O are back vowels - Y, Ä, Ö are front vowels - I, E are neutral ones (technically front). You can never mix front and back vowels in same word (unless the word itself consists of two or more words). Neutral ones can be used with either. Pronunciation: Front vowels form in the front of your throat , back vowels in the back of your throat. You can test this by alternating the pairs A-Ä and/or O-Ö. Your mouth does exactly the same but the sound should form in different part of your throat (should be able to feel it with your hand too). That is also the reason why they don't exist within same words.

As a fellow Brit learning Finnish, it's not impossible. Hopefully that course will go into the case endings and when they're used as that is a massive part of learning the language. Once you understand the endings, you can learn a word and know how to use it pretty much any way you want, it does take a while to get your head around though. I've learned about 10 cases now and still find new situations in which they're used or that something that may be ON something in English, like the name badge you saw, in Finnish uses the inessive ending which usually corresponds to something being IN somewhere in English but certain things like the name on the badge, being ON the phone, ON a train etc use the inessive ending in Finnish. I really like the structure of the language though, English must be a nightmare for Finn's and others with similar languages to learn. It's lazy at times, complicated in others and has a lot of "filler words" that other languages just don't use. Good luck, you'll get there if you want it enough.

A, O, U are said in front of your mouth and Ä, Ö and Y are basically the same sounds but in back of your mouth. In Finnish you don't want to change from front sounds to back sounds or vice versa. I and E are middle sounds. They can be used with both front and back sounds but if they are alone they are back sounds.

You're doing really well! Does word dive teach grammar as well or only phrases? I was wondering, because some changes in word structure are going to be confusing if you don't know the grammar behind it. Oh, and also! How to remember ä and ö. It's called 'vowel harmony', and basically it means that Finnish has back and front vowels, which only go with others of their kind (they don't mix). A O U are back vowels (kinda said more in the back of your mouth near the throat), and Ä Ö Y are front vowels (spoken mid-mouth). I E can be both. eg. lyödä (to hit) vs. luoda (to create). Just don't mix them! This is why some foreign loan words like olympialaiset (olympics) are kinda hard to pronounce and some actually say it 'olumpialaiset', because O and Y don't mix :)

You're actually doing great! And your pronunciation is pretty good. I have one tip for you: when there's *y* in a syllable, you need to use *ä* or *ö* (not a or o) and when there's *u* in a syllable, you need to use *a* or *o* . Actually, it's also easier to pronounce "ua" than "uä" or "yä" than "ya". I don't know if that made any sense to you but yeah, have fun learning!😂

Dave, one thing that would help you a lot is if you learned how to pronounce the Finnish alphabet before trying to learn anything else. That's something no Finnish teacher ever seems to tell you. Every bit of further learning would become so much easier for you, because basically every letter is ALWAYS pronounced the same, no matter the word or its context. And definitely take time learning the difference between "A" and "Ä", as well as "O" and "Ö". Foreigners always have a hard time with these letters, so they often tend to kinda not take them seriously, but if you truly wanna learn the language they're super important letters.

Hei lykkyä pyttyyn! You're doing really well! Grammatical cases in Finnish are hard so we're pretty forgiving with those. And that said, you should really try some Finnish tongue twisters and proverbs! One of my fave proverbs is "elämä hymyilee kuin silakka piimätuopissa" (lit. translation is "life is smiling like a Baltic herring in a mug of buttermilk").

I think it will really mess you up in the long run if you understand the words wrong like in the case of "talossa". It doesn't just mean "the house" but "in the house" (-ssa = in). We don't really use prepositions in Finnish, we just add stuff to the end of the word (postpositions?). Also, you need to be careful with the Swedish, some words are similar but most words are completely different :D You're doing pretty good though and I'm looking forward to seeing you improve!

Don't know how much or how long you had studied otherwise at the time of this video but your pronunciation's already quite good. One thing you're yet to catch here is that the "accents" (accent marks) aren't really "accents", they're actually _distinctly_ different symbols for _different_ sounds. Once you start to hear that, spelling will be very easy. One unfortunate feature of that app is that it seems to do what I guess most other formal (in a sense anyway) methods always do, which is teaching you really stiff ultra-literate style that _no one_ uses in real conversations. But you probably know that. And immersion... works miracles. I always thought it was odd how everyone seems to think Finnish is really difficult (or substantially more difficult than whatever else). It's not, you're showcasing that right here. ...(I hope you're progressing at least at only a moderately reduced rate :) )

Amazing! Looks difficult but you're progressing! Looks quite difficult. I speak one foreign language and I'm working on another. I know how you feel. "What is that?" "Why does it use that form?" "What the hell am I doing?" "That's the wrong form of the verb!" "Will I ever speak/read/write this language???" It comes with well-regulated time.

I guess you already know this but you really dont have to know every word for example "tulla, tulee". Finnish people will understand you anyways so dont stress that too much! You are learning so fast dude! Keep it going

That was pretty damn impressive, Finnish is a hard language for someone who isn’t native. Good luck with conjugations. As you may already have noticed, that is a living hell right there.

I just learned that the swedish pojke for boy is actually derived from the finnish poika. One of the actually quite a few words loaned that way. There are at least 10 times more borrowed from swedish to finnish though. btw. 7:33 oh if only it was that simple. The postfixes must be really hard to learn.

And I know it is reeally hard but if you're actually serious about learning more Finnish, I recommend you to learn the most common suffixes, for example *in* the house = talo *ssa* , *from* the house = talo *sta* , *to* the house = talo *on* (okay this is a tricky one because it can change with different words. The endings with this suffix are *oon*, *iin*, *ään*, *öön*, *han*, *hen*, *hon* ...yeah.. usually the word's ending vowel determines which one you should use)

Well dave, finnish worlds (Nominatives) bend in many ways. For example, koira (dog), koiran, koirat, koiraa, koirassa, koirasta, koiraan, koiralla, koiralta, koiralle, koirani, koirasi, koiransa, koiramme, koiranne, koiransa, and so long.
