I’m neither autistic nor do I have adhd but I still had immense hatred and disgust scooping out the guts as a kid. I remember I’d run away, gag, cry. Hated it. I’ve since gotten mostly past it (still gross but I can eventually scoop it out) but those memories of being made to scoop my own pumpkin as a kid still haunt me

Well my mom did that part. And basically every other part. I did stamp the shapes i wanted my pumpkin to have before my mom carved it for me tho???? Although not diagnosed as autistic tho. Although i am diagnosed as so severely anxious both socially and just in general that i mimic many of the same characteristics as someone who is autistic. Although i guess since it is a spectrum i could be on the spectrum???? Idk how its defined???? But same

Highly recommend using metal spoons to scoop the guts next time you try this, those carving kits are pretty useless because they're designed to be "kid friendly" XD

This! Use a proper sturdy metal spoon and really scrape the sides to get all those strings out.

Your pumpkins turned out great! If you wanted to avoid the pumpkin guts and decomposition, you could always try buying some artificial pumpkins made for carving. Some of the foam ones look pretty realistic, especially in the dark with lights inside.

Dremel tool , saws, real wood carving tools become your friend in pumpkin carving the level you wish to do. Also a nice tip is cut off the bottom of your pumpkin insead of the top.

For anyone struggling with knives!! Get a Spaghetti Squash Knife! At least for more basic carving. I still have my moms from the 80's and searched for a couple years to find a backup. Also, if you want a cleaner inside of the pumpkin... use a canning lid. We always had a bent one on hand to use as a scraper and just scrape till nice and clean! This also helps to avoid fires from hanging fibers. 😊🎃

Happy birthday! And I'd say you can finally add pumpkin carving to your skill list! Those little orange pumpkin knives are great for caving simple shapes in pumpkins with reasonably thin rinds, but as you discovered, they're also pretty cheap. You have to be pretty delicate with the amount of pressure you use - which is not exactly the easiest thing to do when carving a pumpkin! One pumpkin carving tip: to let more light out through small holes, trim the hole on the inside of the pumpkin so that it's wider than the hole on the outside. It can make a surprising difference!

Nice job! I find carving is easier if you thin the inner walls until they aren't slimey so much as firm and when you're done carving you can use lemon juice as a sort of preservative

These came out amazing! Congratulations on making pumpkin carving work for you! I haven't carved pumpkins for years, and only did the basic jack-o-lantern type, but I would suggest using a more stable surface, like a kitchen counter, or at least a less-wobbly table, to make the process easier in the future. Also, I hate to say this, but we always scraped the insides of the pumpkins down to the flesh, removing all the stringy bits--I *think* that helps them last a little longer, though that also could have just been my family of origin's slight OCD... I was also thinking that for the hobbit houses, it might make sense to purchase the foam pumpkins from the craft store. It does violate the idea of pumpkin carving as emphemeral art, but if you're going to add that many extra bits and bobs to them, composting them (for example) becomes problematic anyway.

The Halloween vibes are in full affect. I've wanted to do some pumpkin carving this year so this was lovely to see and the end results were lovely especially the first one with the little design and tiger pumpkin where my faves. This October has been very fun so far. I went to a Halloween market yesterday. Saw transformers one on Friday which was incredible and I plan to do a love marathon of my favourite horror series ALIEN. Happy birthday month! Some of the pumpkins at the lot, the ones with long protrusions that kind of bulged at the stem, looked like geese. The Hobbit hole pumpkins are a fun idea. Using the awl to poke 'stars' into the cat-and-witch-campfire pumpkin, as well as for their eyes, was cool. And the Tiger pumpkin is fearsome! I usually go for the classic jack-o'lantern faces. My method is to stab into the pumpkin with a butcher knife, and switch to a steak or paring knife if I need a smaller blade.

I never considered using a jab saw for carving pumpkins, but after some of the really thicc fleshed hard skinned ones I've grown, I'm considering getting one to keep in the kitchen! I've also heard that if you're trying to get your carved pumpkin to last longer before it starts getting moldy, to give it a dunk in bleach water.

Might I recommend an herb knife for carving. The plastic kits sold are intended to be safe for kids so they aren't very sharp. A sharper knife gives you a lot more control

it makes it a lot easier to carve the pumpkins if you scrape off a lot of the flesh from the inside before trying to carve all the way through from the outside lol-- just make it thinner in the place you'll be cutting through :)

pumpkin carving tip- 1 use non serrated proper knives. 2 instead of sawing the hole on the top open if u just stab it a couple times in a circle with a chef knife its a lot easier. 3 scoop the guts w a metal cooking spoon or just even a regular metal spoon. 4 if u soak the seeds in salt water and toast em in the oven they’re v tasty. and finally 5 the slime always feels like hell…😔
