Trying to play like the great Efren Reyes | Your Average Pool Player

How many tries does it take an average player to do what professional pool players do on the first try? Your Average Pool Player (Rollie Williams) tries to recreate Efren Reyes' ridiculous topspin shot from the early 90's, and learns a lot about spin control, cheating the pocket, table conditions, and more.
Efren Reyes has been dominating the pool world for 30 years, so there will be many more Efren shots to come.
Thanks so much for your comments, let us know if there's a particularly hard shot you'd like us to try.
The track used in the video is 'Rest' by Otis McDonald: • Rest - Otis McDonald |...

That shot is beyond any superlatives I can come up with. To play it as he did with just about perfection - I'm struggling to think of anyone else who would see it let alone attempt it. The guy isn't called a magician for nothing. Greatest of all time. Bar none. 7 tries!? Nice man 👏👏👏

Great videos. In this case I think Efrens angle was harder to play. That's why he needed much more spin. I met Efren on a tournament in Germany and asked him to replay this specific shot (he couldn't even remember it :D). He tried a few times but didn't succeed. So playing a shot like this under tournament condition... he is called The Magician for a reason. ;) By the way he and Francisco are such nice guys. Open, humble and friendly (Francisco is also a fun trash talker :D). It was a great honour to meet them both.

Did you just made him try one shot?....after a lot of battle he won't probably remember every shot he made....he's called the magician because he do things that impossible for other....And in every impossible shot the he do the viewer's/audience always get stun but Sir Efren is just like "NAHH or sometimes Smile" It seems you only really play with him once.. Edit : sorry for my bad English:>

Reyes himself even said that he tried a lot of shots, some work and some didn't go in but at the end of the day people will remember you for trying it and does remember the 1's that went in and that is the reason why he wasn't afraid of doing amazing shots.

The thing is that a pool table is not that expensive to get (in my country you can get a solid one for 600€ - 700€ ). The issue is the space. You need a lot of space,in order to shoot easily and properly when the ball contacts with the cousin.

It's funny you mention the felt at the end, as I've got an English pool table (I'm from England, unsurprisingly) and I've been trying some of the shots you've been doing, I can tell you it's damn hard with the thick nap of English pool (i.e. Snooker) cloth. The balls don't slide any where near as easily so you don't get the slide-then-spin effect that you do on an American table. Top spin off a cushion for example tends to just slow/stop the ball, rather than slide for a few inches then arc back. As much as I love my table, I'm sorely tempted to throw an American cloth on it so I can play around with trickshots more...

@Zombies8MyPizza 6 жыл бұрын
With this shot, the harder you hit it the greater the effect because you get more topspin. This is actually a commonly used technique in snooker as it's safer to hit it hard when pocketing a hanger if you're looking to keep the white close to where the object ball was, than it is to try and slow-roll it and trust the table to not roll off, or to try a drag shot which requires great touch. Search a snooker video titled Simply Banana which shows various uses of this type of shot.
@cammy_No1
@cammy_No1 6 жыл бұрын
Usually the less power you put in to the shot the greater effect spin takes you've just got to drive the cue through when taking the shot with the right amount of power obviously a pool table maybe different I've only played these type of shots on a snooker table
@Zombies8MyPizza
@Zombies8MyPizza 6 жыл бұрын
Cameron This is incorrect. Dr David Alciatore - who has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering and has spent decades examining the physics of billiards and is arguably the most knowledgeable mind in pool (pool physics are generally no different to snooker physics - both games are played with two round balls that weigh the same as each other, and the cushions respond in very similar ways also) - has several articles that demonstrate that the amount of spin imparted on the cue ball is determine by 3 variables - tip position, cue speed on impact and cue elevation. In a specific and practically relevant example here, the higher and harder you strike the cue ball, the more spin you apply. The above is why players like Ronnie O'Sullivan are deemed to be able to get more backspin with less effort than most other players - the timing of his acceleration is impeccable, meaning his tip reaches its top speed just as it's striking the cue ball, meaning it looks like he's hitting the ball a lot softer than he really is; and his cue is typically elevated more than most other players when he's applying backspin, so he not only maintains a low striking position on the cue ball, but also gets a sharper reaction from the cue ball due to the cue elevation. Cue elevation is of course never recommended as it reduces accuracy, but he's a freak of nature.
@cammy_No1
@cammy_No1 6 жыл бұрын
Zombies Ate My Pizza! To be fair I've always noticed elevation of the cue always seems to make my long shots a lot more accurate, but I'm only talking about experience from my own game on the last comment and I think I'm at least at a good standard with my game, but it's different for everybody just depends how you play I guess
@Zombies8MyPizza
@Zombies8MyPizza 6 жыл бұрын
Cameron Definitely not advisable, but then a lot of the pros do things that aren't advisable! Ronnie is one of them. Also, while he's not the best player in the world, Rory McLeod is a great long potter and he always seems to play with a bit of an elevated cue. As I said, it will decrease your accuracy if you don't strike it well, if you strike off-centre then you'll add some swerve to the ball which is guaranteed to make you miss at long range, but if you strike the centre of the cue ball most of the time then it shouldn't be an issue.
@cammy_No1
@cammy_No1 6 жыл бұрын
Zombies Ate My Pizza! Definitely agree with that if you're not cueing well then it can make you miss a lot of shot you'd normally pot, there is a video on you tube where Ronnie talks about controlling the cue ball and says something about hitting it at the same pace on mostly every shot the only thing he changes his the grip on the back end of the cue if you can find the video it's quite interesting and a lot of what he says makes sense when you've played the game for a while

Whilst one who has an average pool playing skills can execute this play in a few tries, I think we also need to consider the amount of pressure one has to deal with in an actual championship match. To be able to come up that kind of play in just a short period of time, and pull that shot perfectly is something an average player (or even some pro players) can only make by pure luck.
