On our urban Homestead, one of our favorite pine tree branches broke so I decided to try and propagate the branches to grow more trees. I have had great success in the past with other trees and plants using this method. Thank you for watching. God bless!

Pine trees are really hard to propagate by cuttings, it's not impossible, but almost. As you probably know, conifers are always hard to propagate this way, as they take ages to form roots (usually about 6 months), and usually die before rooting (without you knowing it, as they can remain green even after two years without roots if the humidity is high enough), but from all conifers, the family Pinaceae (pine trees, spruces, firs, etc) are the hardest... And I see a big problem: pine trees can't sprout from wood, they need their needles (the buds are hidden between each couple), so it is impossible for the ones without leaves to survive.
@OrganicallyAnn
@OrganicallyAnn 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the comment - I appreciate your input. majority of my cuttings have pine needles remaining and I'm hoping for the best. I did mention in my video that it takes at least a year to root and that I am hoping for them to root. I have propagated other types of plants and wanted to try - that's the beauty of gardening - try, try, try - if you don't try you'll never know. I do think that the cuttings with new growth will do the best in time. One thing I do know that is fruitful is growing pines from seeds (from the same tree). I show this in my I Grew Pine Trees From Pine Cone Seeds kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=3e9HTdw0ufk if you are interested. Blessings.

Muhammad Zharif that’s the beauty of gardening. It is difficult to propagate From Cuttings but i think the conditions need to be just right. A Do Not Disturb sign needs to be on the pine cuttings (lavender too). If u mess with them and keep checking they will fail. Keep covered, out of direct sun and water occasionally and they should take. It is actually so much easier growing from pine cone seeds than cuttings. But then again i like the challenge. Thanks for the comment. Blessings

In general, almost all hardwood or conifer cuttings are hard and have a low success rate, like single digit percentages. But on the other hand, it's easy too take a lot of cuttings, so just take dozens, 100's, and hope for the best. But don't crowd them too much, and check them often and remove any with fungus quickly. Try various techniques for different species. I would consider 5 or 10% success a good result.

It's best to use the springtime shoots or candles as cuttings. Wait until the candles bloom in late spring and use them as cuttings. Pine rarely strike roots from hardwood

I will try the candles in late spring - thanks for the tip. I have tried propagating pine in all four seasons, new growth, hard growth and semi - i only had one root (new growth in spring) but it died - i like propagating from seeds😂 my success rate is virtually 100% (depending on my care😂). Did you have great success? I have a mondell pine in Arizona. First year after getting a 6 foot tree in the ground and to survive the brutally hot summer was very difficult. The spear of the tree died back because someone forgot to water it. Lost about a foot and a half. It's growing great right now. I wish there was a way to graft a new spear on it. Very rare I've found. There's only one video on youtube about doing that. That video is a pro on a pine tree farm. Great video, hope they all rooted for you.

Pines don’t seem to like being rooted, it’s nearly impossible, sterilized medium is necessary, and my success rate for rooting most pines is less than 20%, BUT grafting them I have an 85% success rate. Propagating pine isn’t usually done this way in a nursery setting due to the failure rate, usually we propagate from seed then graft onto the seedlings, that way we have all genetically identical copies. One thing you could do if you really like the tree is to collect its cones, plant the seeds(after stratification) wait until they’re pencil diameter then take cuttings from the tree, there are many ways to do it and some pines graft better when you use the candles, but one thing is for certain, it will not root without an apiary branch, auxin is produced in the tips which send the signal for rooting, among other things. Another thing is it has to be done in winter a couple months before the last frost, sometimes you have to store cuttings in the fridge for many months before attempting propagation. Pines are a pain in the backside, but it sure is rewarding when they take
@OrganicallyAnn
@OrganicallyAnn 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for this reply💚 I had great success from pine cone seedlings. The propagating from cuttings I attempted 3 different times of the year and only got one hopeful that ended up dying, because I got so excited and messed with it too much (smothered it with “love” 😂) - they are so touchy. I will be sure to try grafting next time. I love trying to propagate different types of plants, with alternate methods. Blessings 🌲

About how long will it take for these branches to root? Also, would this work if you took a thick branch cutting like maybe for a bonsai, maybe something with the circumference of a money quarter or bigger?
@barbaramerk2281
@barbaramerk2281 2 жыл бұрын
These branches never rooted, that's why there is no update. Pines can't be rooted this way, you have to grow them from seed (which is quick and easy). But you could try it with other conifers suitable for bonsai like cryptomeria (Japanese cedar) or cypress. Maybe even juniper. But not pine. Don't waste your time.

ThePerson1959 thank u so much! I actually tried a few branches in February when I started seeing the tips with a bit of new growth on the tips. (I wouldn’t wait too much longer into spring if u want to try it now because the energy of the tree will go towards making new growth to the branches vs rooting). The branches I harvested are about 10” long - I stripped about 7” of needles and left 3” to the tip. I still scratched the stem a bit before putting it in root tone. They are doing good! I will film an update video around July to see how everyone is doing. I also incorporated a bit more exposure to sunlight (still covered with plastic). Not full direct sunlight but more than in the video. Here’s to hoping for success 🌲. My pine seedlings are doing awesome - and a lot easier to yield new trees kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZaceYearJWonM0

I have a cutting from a beautiful Weeping Pine. And I just so happened to get a cutting that produced a very small cone on one of the branches! They're currently in water atm too! So what do I do next? I didn't use any rooting powder yet. And I want this one to take. Do I instead use the tiny cone it produced, or do I leave that on it and continue to just place it in a soil mixture to root?
@OrganicallyAnn
@OrganicallyAnn Жыл бұрын
I would remove the little pine cone, because it could pull energy away from trying to root and give it to growing the pine cone (is the pine cone full size - If it’sfull size save the seeds - it’s way easier than via cuttings). Root tone always helps, so be sure to get the cutting in whatever soil medium you are using asap. I try and get my cuttings in soil within an hour of cutting (once cut they first go right into water). I hope you have great success 🌲

I don’t know if pine trees are like cannabis but, I don’t think you should have more than one cutting per pot… is this correct?
@OrganicallyAnn
@OrganicallyAnn 11 ай бұрын
During the propagation process, it does not hurt to have a few cuttings in the same pot, even cannabis lol. The propagation process takes months to take, so I put them together to see if they would actually take. Once they are established you need to separate any propagation, because you don’t want them to tangle. I have not had success as of yet with the Pines Propagating. Only once, one got a small set of roots, but I ended up messing with it and killed it. Since that time I have not had any success. It is very difficult. I do, however, have great success Propagating Pines from Seeds. Thank you for your comment and for watching💚

About 4 months ago I did a short update video showing a pine cutting that wasn't from the first batch - the first batch died from fungus gnats and mold, second batch same thing, but this cutting was taken around this time of year and is hanging in there. I don't want to touch it because every time I mess with it too much by removing the plastic they fail. So far so good - let's hope for the best. The failed first two batches I think were from too much water - thus the fungus gnats and mold. Here is a link to that update: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaGzqYdrl5t6fNk Blessings

I kept it covered with plastic the whole time and after some time noticed they started to turn brown. I had also left it under a lot of sun. I'm so sad and heartbroken as I feel the browning isn't a good sign. What did I do wrong? Is there a chance to save them? I have taken the plastic off now. Cory Summers I don’t know yet. I Propagated them about 2 months ago. Some of the pine needles from the newer growth cuttings have remained green which I think is a good sign. I just did a garden tour video posted yesterday 12/17 and showed a peak at those clones. I don’t want to disturb them too much because I heard it can take up to a year to successfully root. I definitely know from Propagating other trees that it is best to not disturb them - aside from watering them for at least 6 months. I have had success with pine seeds though - video coming this week. Thanks for the question - blessings

I am going to try a new batch around November and combat the fungus gnats, those little bugs rot the cuttings. Thank you for commenting and watching - it means a lot.

The easiest way to make or propagate cuttings???? of a pine tree is??? in steam of running water😱😱😱2 inches of 1/2inch stem that’s 10 inches long🥳 after it flushes.... immediately put the cutting in water so that it starts absorbing water through the cut ... The pH of the water should be about 6.4 you can use the water in your goldfish bowl🤣🤣🤣 because that’s basically what I did was put a pond with a stream😁😁😁stuffed it with goldfish and now I make plants🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 and since I have learned how to do it correctly I have any hundred percent success rate🎉🎉🎉

Captaincashmoneyliquor no, her eye got scratched by our cat when she was 3 months old. It tragically happened so fast and was unexpected since our cat was besties with our old pitbull. Her eye was starting to heal, but then her and her brother were rough housing one day and it ruptured😭. Ironic thing is, she has such a great personality that she lets nothing stops her - and she even likes our cat! How did your mum’s cat loose an eye? Thank you for the comment💚.

He is 3 or 4 now same thing, tougher than all the other dogs when they play, although he is still a little clutsy if you try to give him a treat from the blind side LOL but the happiest dog, you wouldnt know hes a one eyed bandit(thats what i call him when i visit them) if you caught him from his good side. Will Mackay u don’t want the soil get dry, but you also don’t want it soggy either, so depending how quickly they dry out where u are will determine it. My first batch i over watered and they all rotted. With them covered it holds the moisture a bit longer - for me - I usually only water once a week - but i always check. Thanks for the question.

I'll be following along to see how this goes! Question - do you just leave outside and let them slowly warm up or do you take inside during the night time? It is still in the 40s here (Indiana) right now so I'm wondering about the protocol of if it's ok to leave them outside when it's chilly like that. Also, do you mist them at all throughout the week or does the water inside the plastic just stay put and continue it's process?
@OrganicallyAnn
@OrganicallyAnn 4 жыл бұрын
So I leave them out night and day. I make sure to have them in a filtered light area - not too much sun, not too little shade. I keep them as covered as I can, because every time that i mess with the cover too much they die. I also don't over water. Those darn fungus gnats are opportunists and love to set up shop with the cuttings. Blessings - I hope this helped.

The first batch died from fungus gnats and mold, second batch same thing, but I did an update 4 months ago from a cutting that was taken around this time of year and is hanging in there. I don't want to touch it because every time I mess with it too much by removing the plastic they fail. So far so good - let's hope for the best. Peace Hunter so far I have one that looks promising, I did an update with it around 4 months ago. They are super sensitive if over watered or uncovered too much. It’s best to keep them in a place where they can be undisturbed for as long as it takes - can even take a year to root. Over watering makes them mold and fungus gnats love to invade. The cuttings that have a bit of semi hard wood and new growth do best - it needs some of the pine needles. Also, very filtered light - too much sun and too hot kill them quicker than u can say, “Bob’s your uncle.” I hope you are successful to preserve that wonderful old tree💚 Thank you for watching - I appreciate you!
@HearturMind
@HearturMind 4 жыл бұрын
So what do you suggest for a warm place that is semi sunny? Would a garage get too hot? Do you think a clear bin with a clear lid would work? Wouldn’t that cut down on the mold by letting light into the container even toward the bottom? Would a towel at the bottom that can be wetted when it starts to dry out help? Or filling only bottom with straws or a cut off hose so no water touches the stems? One last question-the one that is working, how long is it? I get that it should have pine needles. Thank you so much!!! Strength in numbers...I will try a large quantity.

Moises Duarte thank u for your comment. I’m sorry if I confused u, In my video I tried hard wood and soft wood to see if either would take - other gardeners claim that eventually i will have one root, so I had to try. I have had good success with propagating other plants and trees so I am determined to try try again till it takes. Thus far I haven’t had success yet, but I do have a few now that have been hanging in there. My first batch I let get too moist so they rotted, second batch fungus gnats killed. This current batch is about 3 months old and looks promising - I used a more sandy soil and only lightly water it from the bottom in the dish under my pot. As soon as I have one that takes I will update everyone - they can take a while to root so please be patient. Blessings💚
