In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the legendary Brandon Eaves to talk about his journey from Evangelical Christianity through to the Catholic Church. Brandon, who you've heard about on this show before, has an incredible story to tell.
After the Catholic conversion of a close friend, Brandon began to ask questions about the Catholic Church - what would compel such an intelligent, Spirit-filled person to become Catholic, of all things. And was in Brandon's pursuit of those answers that he began to unwind his own misconceptions about Catholicism, ask pointed questions about his own beliefs, and eventually realize that in order to follow Christ completely, he needed to become Catholic.
It's an amazing story and Brandon is an incredibly humble story teller.
Listen to Brandon's friend, Chris Kellam, tell his amazing story here:

If you want someone else on your show, I was raised Jewish, and became an on-fire Protestant at age 17. It took me 6 years of searching/researching. Then I spent 45 years as a preacher, missionary, evangelist, and deliverance minister. I was also strongly anti-Catholic, even to the point of rejecting Christmas and Easter because they were instituted by the Catholic Church. Two years ago, God used an ex-Episcopalian priest to suggest to me that the Eucharist was indeed the real presence of Christ. I knew I couldn't really prove it wasn't, so I set out to find out. This started me down a path of evaluating all doctrines in light of the first century Church. I spent 2 years, 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, investigating everything. Once I found that I was wrong about my views of the Communion only being a symbol, it really made me think that I could be wrong on other things. All during this time I had no thought to become Catholic. I was actually looking to start my own church that would be 100% based on the first century. Only after I had seen how wrong I had been on a number of key doctrines, the thought of becoming Catholic was presented to me. I went to a mass, and was blown away. God caused me to see the beauty of it. At some point I went and asked to join RCIA, so I could learn more. After 4 months, they decided I was ready for confirmation, and now I am an on-fire Catholic. I left out a ton of detail, but that is the general story. You can learn more about me by reading my book "Sent Out", which is available on Amazon. www.amazon.com/Sent-Out-Journey-Totally-Changed/dp/1957342048

Dear@@whathappening5323, Fox's book of martyrs? It was polemical, and meant to inflame. The numbers were increased by including common criminals. Did you know that what we think we know about the Spanish Inquisition we learned from Protestant pamphleteers? Someone finally opened the court records a couple decades ago, and found out the truth, which is so much less lurid. They certainly didn't use the "iron maiden" which was a "torture device" that was made as part of a traveling show and wouldn't even work. There were bad acts done -- don't get me wrong. And there were martyrs. But the victor gets to write history, and "Bloody Mary" was not the victor. Her nickname was not deserved.

It makes me wonder just how often churches have these pastor problems (infidelity to spouse/other sexual sins)…. I thought it was super rare when it happened at my baptist church in the early 2000s. Head pastor started an illicit relationship w the Music minister’s wife. Almost destroyed the congregation. But I keep hearing story after story of this happening. It’s not shocking that human beings inevitably gonna fail, but it does make sense to me the importance of rooting one’s faith in a robust belief system that outlasts even the worst infiltrators who fail so hard. I feel for those who attend congregations that are super wrapped up in a celebrity pastor… bc when that person falls to sin and scandal, often times it hits the flock so hard, many can’t get over it or feel they have nowhere to go and end up leaving the faith altogether. Very sad.

@@wjtruax I made no claim that every Protestant denomination is correct, just more correct Scripturally than the catholic church who pompously believes their man-made tradition is equal the the Scripture The WORD was made flesh, NOT the traditions of the catholic church. Some denominations did in fact choose to accept PARTS of catholic doctrine to different extents. Nevertheless, in the Scripture, baptism was reserved for those who believed in the word of God and the teachings of Jesus, and they had to be adults conscious enough to make that decision. To this day all Christian denominations EXCEPT Seventh day Adventists embrace the catholic churchs changing the Sabbath to Sunday (by an act of mere men) while its obvious that Jesus, being Jewish, observed the historical Jewish Sabbath of sundown Friday to sundown Saturday.

Wonderful & very well articulated testimony. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The amount of rich references from Scripture, Tradition, Contextual history of the Church Fathers, Saints old & comparably new were amazing recaps for me. Anybody who is looking at their own Tradition & perhaps even a national 'lens' on their Christianity, but is beginning to see the broader Church through time & cultures can only benefit by taking notes of the references throughout. Brandon also hit the nail on the head as regards conversation with our Protestant brothers & sisters. I've found starting off by 'defining terms', i.e. Grace, Justification, Sanctification & Merit really helps. The penny drops when we're on the same page so much easier, otherwise I've seen entire epic novel long chatter were people talk past one another. I also think Brandon's sympathy for Calvin & seeing ( as opposed to a Catholics first reaction ) the human that was trying to be sincere is a great approach. We should follow that example with eachother both in & outside the Church - it's a timely message. Thanks so much guys 😊

I like that discussion about Mary, you just cannot pick a certain belief in Catholicism. You have to look at the whole. The Catholic faith is so huge in all aspects that you cannot describe it, explain it or disapprove it just by focusing on one belief. The Catholic faith are these -> the Immaculate Conception, the Eucharist, the Confession, other sacraments, the Pope, the devotion to the Divine Mercy, the Rosary, the Brown Scapular of Mt. Carmet, the stigmatist St. Padre Pio, Mother Thersea of Calcutta, the Lourdes apparition, the Guadalupe apparition, the Fatima apparition, the hundreds of Marian apparitions and its messages, the Pope, the priest, the Eucharistic miracles, the visions of saints, etc.. The Catholic church is the rock Jesus pertains when he was still living on Earth. Protestantism has done so much damage to the true church of Jesus Christ, it has deceived so many people throughout the ages and it will continue on in the future. If you are a young Protestant, I beg you to convert now and don't wait until you are in your 40s, 50s, 60s or 70s before converting to the true church of Jesus Christ. You are missing a lot especially the Eucharist. You can cry and be emotional in your Protestant service but that is not the true worship Jesus Christ handed to the apostles. PLS. First of all it is not the church started by Peter! It was started by the Holy Spirit (Pentecost) and study who is always the ROCK in the Bible. Peter was only a "stone". Learn from the original Greek and Hebrew texts. And I left the RCC about 35 years ago because I started reading the Bible and compared it with the history, teachings, traditions and hierarchy (clergy) of this institution. Today I know that there is no perfect Christian church/community. Christians still can fail and sin but Jesus is the vine and we are the branches. All belong to his real church who believe in him and who are trusting his words. John 3,16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. John 8 31Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. 32And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 14,6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 1Joh 1,9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purif us from all unrighteousness. John 14,23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. Gal 5,22+23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

But for those who vehemently attack you AND get upset if you defend yourself - that really sucks. If you want to dialogue - cool! If you don't want to dialogue - cool. But how can accuse anyone of horrible things and then not allow them to defend themselves. About ANY topic.

Many people does not know or understand that when a child is born into this world, he actually belongs to the world whose prince is The evil one! By Baptism child is claimed by Christ into his family, God’s family. How many parents wait for the child to decide on to potty train, brush the teeth or bath or even to go to school! Parents decide for the child most of non essentials and wait for the child to decide on the most important matter namely belonging to the family of God!

I hope you don’t feel like you are holier than thou to Catholics who attend novus ordo. Whether you like it or not, the pope has authority over the liturgy and always has had such authority. Roman Catholic Church,”The term originates as an insult created by Anglicans who wished to refer to themselves as Catholic. They thus coined the term “Roman Catholic” to distinguish those in union with Rome from themselves and to create a sense in which they could refer to themselves as Catholics (by attempting to deprive actual Catholics to the right to the term). Different variants of the “Roman” insult appeared at different times. The earliest form was the noun “Romanist” (one belonging to the Catholic Church), which appeared in England about 1515-1525. The next to develop was the adjective “Romish” (similar to something done or believed in the Catholic Church), which appeared around 1525-1535. Next came the noun “Roman Catholic” (one belonging to the Catholic Church), which was coined around 1595-1605. Shortly thereafter came the verb “to Romanize” (to make someone a Catholic or to become a Catholic), which appeared around 1600-10. Between 1665 and 1675 we got the noun “Romanism” (the system of Catholic beliefs and practices), and finally we got a latecomer term about 1815-1825, the noun “Roman Catholicism,” a synonym for the earlier “Romanism.” A similar complex of insults arose around “pope.” About 1515-25 the Anglicans coined the term “papist” and later its derivative “papism.” A quick follow-up, in 1520-1530, was the adjective “popish.” Next came “popery” (1525-1535), then “papistry” (1540-1550), with its later derivatives, “papistical” and “papistic.” (Source: Random House Webster’s College Dictionary, 1995 ed.) This complex of insults is revealing as it shows the depths of animosity English Protestants had toward the Church. No other religious body (perhaps no other group at all, even national or racial) has such a complex of insults against it woven into the English language as does the Catholic Church. Even today many Protestants who have no idea what the origin of the term is cannot bring themselves to say “Catholic” without qualifying it or replacing it with an insult.😃😃

The Catholic Church teaches that ALL is God's grace. All GOOD is from God. Even our being able to freely accept His gifts is His gracious gift to us. God first loved us. The love with which we love Him back is His gift to us -- we cannot love on our own. We have NO good works of our own. That is not the teaching of the Catholic Church. The Church herself is God's gift to us. So is the Bible that was written to help us to believe in God and to see Salvation History. The New Testament is concealed in the Old Testament, and the Old Testament is revealed in the New. And part of the New Testament revelation is the Church -- called by the Father, set up for us and accompanied by the Son, and guided by the Spirit. Read the Acts of the Apostles. Please learn what God is trying to teach you through the Church -- a lot of it is written in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, with Biblical references. You can safely believe everything the Church teaches.

My wording is simple- just the message of the Gospel that Jesus commands us to share. If we think that our salvation lies in the work we do or perhaps through a priest/ pope then we lose the true meaning of the Cross and the final work that Jesus accomplished on the Cross. Love all the wonderful work that the Catholic Church does but never forget we have to get to first base before we get to third. 🙏
