the way that you immediately caught on to the meaning of Rats wow i’m impressed lol. and idk if you know this already but this band has lore! it’s kinda hard to catch onto in just the mvs but there’s some explanations that exist online, but the one you might be already aware of is the “Papas” which are the different “singers” the band cycles through (they’re all the same guy just technically different characters)

Cirice is pronounced Sir/reece! The mother in the music video says it at the beginning and its very easy to miss, I've loved Ghost for 5+ years and I've never heard anyone pronounce Cirice right the first time lol. I'm so glad you decided to check them out and I'm really glad you like them! I highly recommend their songs Darkness at the heart of my love and Year Zero! (Also fun fact the "demon guys" are called Ghouls! They have elements based on their positions in the band and the fans have given them nicknames based on those elements)

Loved this reaction. Ghost has quickly become one of my favorite bands after discovering them in 2019. IMO their whole discography is amazing. I enjoyed how you were able to breakdown the meanings of the songs so easily. I would totally watch you do more Ghost content. And if you don’t I wish you well on your Ghost journey offline. You should listen to The Amazing Devil! They're absolutely amazing, lyrics are more like poetry and each song is so powerful in its own right. I Strongly recommend: That Unwanted Animal, Farewell Wanderlust, Old Witch Sleep and Good Man Grace, and Wellyboots or Marbles! Honestly so many of the songs are absolutely beautiful and haunting.

IT ABOUT DAMN TIME

There's a pretty big "lore" in Ghost. It's basically an ancient satanic cult called "The Ministry", which wanted to spread the word of Satan in the most effective way available. In the late 60's/early 70's, since Rock music was on a global hype, they decided to spread the word that way, founding a rock band called Ghost. The lead singer would always have the title of "Papa" (which means pope). The first one was called Papa Nihil (the one we see earning the face paint and the white eye in 'Dance Macabre' video). Following the downfall of Rock, Ghost went in the shadows and was never seen again... until 2010, when the band suddenly reappears, now with a new lead singer: Papa Emeritus I (eldest son of Papa Nihil) releasing the first album (Opus Eponymous). After that, each album has a new frontman. That being said, we had Papa Emeritus II (younger brother of the previous one) in 'Infestissuman' (2013), Papa Emeritus III (youngest of the brothers) in 'Meliora' (2015) and then all 3 were mysteriously murdered, leaving the frontman spot open, but no more Nihil sons to fill in. Because of that, they were forced to, for the first time, use someone out of the bloodline, and, as so, he couldn't be called "papa". So we had Cardinal Copia for the 4th album ('Prequelle', 2018). Papa Nihil dies onstage and now, with the old leader dead, Sister Imperator (the woman we see initiating Nihil in 'Dance Macabre') promoted Cardinal Copia to papa, officially named Papa Emeritus IV and he was the frontman for the 5th and current album, "Impera', from 2022. The music video for the song 'Kiss The Go Goat' (supposedly a song from the old days when the band was formed in the 60's) reveals us some details that fill some holes in the plot. Back then, Nihil and Imperator were lovers, but as he was becoming a rockstar, he was getting too much attention from his female fans and for that reason they broke up. Sister Imperator was pregnant told him. Now, in current days, she was actually the one who ordered all Nihil's sons to be killed, so she could point someone new to the role and that someone was Cardinal Copia, her and Nihil's bastard son. That way she got her revenge and at the same time could put his bastard son in his place of right, as papa and leader of the band. Obviously, all that is just fiction and was being told and revealed to us slowly through the years by the band in all sorts of media (specially short lore videos they release on the band's KZbin channel). The lead singer behind the mask (all of the masks), songwriter and creator of it all is Tobias Forge. Albums are always conceptual too. The first 3 were 3 parts of a same story. 'Opus Eponymous' is about the annunciation of the Antichrist coming to Earth. 'Infestissuman' is about his birth and first contact with mankind. 'Meliora is about the relation between him and men becoming stronger and stronger, to the point we reach the absolute absence of God. The next 2 had a new concept of their own. 'Prequelle' being about comparing faith and blind beliefs to a plague, fast spreading and dangerous (having the Black Plague as the background for the concept). And finally, 'Impera' is about the mankind's fetish for power and how frail it is, taking empires as the main example, since every single one of them throughout history has risen and then fallen. Never failed and will never fail. Modern empires, no matter how much they seem to be unbreakable, will eventually fall. It's just a matter of time. Well... that's only the tip. The iceberg is way bigger. And I can tell by your reactions (and the facts that you have good taste for music and is a curious guy) you will dive in naturally. You've been ghosted :P

Ghost is such a great band cos they have some haunting and beautiful songs like Cirice but also just bops such as MOAC. The first horseman, atop a white horse, is either conquest or pestilence depending on the interpretation. In this instance, I would imagine pestilence was what they were going for. Death rides a pale horse, pale probably indicating ashen-colored based on the root word in Greek.

Cirice is the Old English word for church, and Papa/Tobias (Ghost's lead and songwriter) has said that "Lyrically, it is a simulation of the relationship between religious authority (church or sect) against the small person who can not differentiate empathy from pure manipulation. Everything disguised as a love song". So in a way, the song is reaching out to you and inviting you in under the guise of acceptance and belonging (first verse), but then I think the dual meaning and manipulation of the church really shines in the 2nd verse: "Now there is nothing between us / From now our merge is eternal. / Can't you see that you're lost? /Can't you see that you're lost without me?". Particularly I find that the darker turn in sound and voice on that very last part highlights this constructed dependence on religious authority, and uncovers the darker side of this relationship. However, at the same time I do find the song overall comforting and as though someone finally sees you for who you are. I wonder if Ghost's satanic symbolism, grounded in Tobias' personal view of Satan, also influenced the message of Cirice. Satan is this oppositional figure to the authority of the church, and perhaps seeks to guide those who have been shunned by the church towards absolution and personal freedom (yet of course the devil's seduction might also be manipulative, who knows).

wow first of all i'm so glad to see you do this and i love that you enjoyed them as well! i was literally in shock when you completely nailed the meaning of rats almost in a scary amount of detail! i also actually found your interpretation of cirice really interesting as a commonly known meaning of the song is how organized religion manipulates their followers into believing they're lost without them ("can't you see that you're lost without me") i love the idea that it's a more positive and affirming one, but i think those can sort of coexist too, with the idea that what some religious leaders are teaching people is really just hate disguised as love, if that makes sense. sort of like telling people to stay away from certain activities or things because they're sinful, meaning that by warning you of them, it's an act of love or saving. keeping you away from what's "bad" even if there's nothing wrong with it. in that sense you could take the line "i know your soul is not tainted, even though you've been told so" to mean that since they're part of this good, holy religion, it's a given that they're not like the sinners. people might tell them they're dirty or impure, but they're safe here. they're on the right path.
