You’ll need an aftermarket or rewound stator that includes a lighting coil. Look for companies like Ricky Stator or Electrosport, which offer custom or upgraded stator solutions. Alternatively, you can have your existing stator rewound to include a lighting coil. Several companies offer stator rewinding services and can modify it to output power for lighting.

Go for LED instead of incandescent, they use much less power that might not cut the engine out, the magneto in that bike is probably only rated just enough to power the ignition module, and that bulb is drawing too much current from it and is pulling down the power causing it to stall... :)

Yeah that bulb probably sucked all the power the magneto was making.

Perhaps you can utilise the gas power, rather than existing electrical system? In the Netherlands when I was a kid, lots of pushbikes used dynamos to power lights that would run off contact with the wheel as it turned. Perhaps you could rig up something similar? When I was doing weekly videos last year or the year before it was constant 14-18 hour days of straight work and really burnt me out with little to show for it aside from a shop full of bikes. I had a similar situation with my 99 DR 350 dirt model which is a kick start and AC powered headlight with no other power because it did not have a battery. I modified the existing stator output wiring and added a regulator rectifier so I could have a DC system to run a led headlight and street legal kit. I was curious if it had enough power to run a pair of off-road led lights and surprisingly it has worked awesome. I've been running this setup for over 3 years now with no issues. Lights stay bright no matter the rpm and the off road lights even though cheap Amazon units are amazingly bright.

@jenniesgarageАй бұрын
Yes but that one was easy because lighting coils were available for that bike.
@patarmstrong3582Ай бұрын
If there is room on the stator plate, you can absolutely add another coil. The distance to the flywheel magnet should be the same as the ignition coil spacing. This shouldn't be difficult for you, Jake.
@jonathantouboul159Ай бұрын
The bulb is just grounding the spark (granted, through a small resistor, but the filament is just making continuity between live and ground). Of course that's not an issue when the coil for lights is separated from the coil for spark. But you did not lose everything, you can repurpose this as a fancy killswitch!

They make LED light bulbs for your interior, they have resistors built-in so that they can accept 12 V.They're actually 1.5 led's. So you should be able to run three or four of them coming straight out of the generator.
@EnduringGuerilaАй бұрын
Are the power lines you're tapping into not AC current from the generator and you need DC for that 12v bulb? Didn't look closely enough at the diagram but I assume you need an AC/DC converter if there isn't one baked into that box. I think I remember seeing you use a multimeter on this channel, you could probe the wires with that and see if it's AC or DC and what voltages it's running at.

an incandescent light bulb will run on AC. consider that lamps plug directly into the wall. incandescent bulbs are just wires that get so hot from current passing through them that they glow.

Catch some Pixies , house them in a suitably sized tin and they'll happily work for moondust. Or... I’m not sure what terrain you’re riding in but if you’re in dry areas what if you set up a small electric generator that is square shaft driven and set up a small fan onto it as the means for rotation. As he moves the more the fan spins the energy created and stored into a small battery which would run the lights. Cage it In for protection. 25$ solution

Pretty sure connecting in parallel is your issue making the bike stop. Try to connect the lamp in series on one of the lines out of the mag. Better still connect a volt meter in parallel first to see what the magneto is putting out. You might need to cap the voltage out with a zener diode for your battery charging... Least that's how my lights were run (no battery) from the mag on an old IT250...
@patarmstrong3582Ай бұрын
The incandescent bulb draws all of the available current from the magneto, and it quits firing the spark. And incandescent would never work here. Must be an led, or he needs to find more electricity ( add a coil,and use an led is the solution)
@Alexander_l322Ай бұрын
I know what you’re trying to do but honestly is it really worth the hassle to add a generator when you can simply zip tie a led light bar to the bike and be done with it. Seems like the cheapest and best way to me or you could make a bracket (we all know you like a good bracket) so the light can be taken off to charge.

And if that don’t work, I have another idea, but it’s hard to explain! Let me know !
@patarmstrong3582Ай бұрын
It doesn't. A diode won't help. There's not enough electricity to rectify. It's a burst of high voltage ac. Perfect to fire a spark plug. It needs a lighting coil fastened to the stator plate where the ignition coil is. Jake will have to drill and tap 2 holes for the coil and choose one that fits. He already did the kx 100, but was able to just buy the stator plate ready to go with two coils. I have a kx 65 and a few z50s, which have lighting coils or not depending on age. This is easily done, sort of. It requires the fabrication skills Jake already has.
