Ascites, also called Water Belly, is a common problem with fast growing meat chickens, and also in older laying hens. It is not a disease, so it is not contagious to the rest of your flock. It is a symptom of a deeper problem, and unfortunately is eventually fatal.
This video is for learning purposes only.
We understand this is not the proper way to handle this but this is the only way we could save her, overall she became much better and lived….. until a raccoon ate her. :(

Sour Crop! I believe it's Sour Crop because they say it's more full of liquid & softer feeling as apposed to being full of solids. Just do research on it. I hope this helps people to differentiate because they are two separate problems with different ways to be treated. 💜🙂

I’ve dealt with a pendulum crop that was also impacted and sour. Once I realized what was going on, it was almost too late. For the first three days I massaged the crop every two hours until I had finally got rid of the impaction. From day one I was adding Rooster Booster Vitamin & Mineral powder to the drinking water along with probiotics. I had already made it a practice to add apple cider vinegar to their water so I continued to do so. Unfortunately, the crop has been stretched out so that it will not return to its normal size. Not to worry. My research led me to a lady on Etsy that hand-makes chicken bras. It was an answered prayer. The bra lifts and holds the pendulum crop in it’s proper place allowing it to function while providing much needed comfort to my girl. She’ll have to wear it the rest of her life but she’s good and comfortable now. On another note, I never tried to make her vomit. I’ve heard from enough veterinarians now who warn against the procedure, I won’t do it. It kills otherwise healthy birds. It’s not required to cure sour crop.

@@susie14 I alternate my solution each day. Some days water w/ apple cider vinegar, other days just the Rooster Booster, and then other days I go with just probiotics. I avoid mixing more than one at the day. Afraid it may taste bad to them or something.

I just lost my rooster I'm sure from this. He was 7. But his crop didn't feel real full. But when we do that mucus come out. And smell. He couldn't eat cause every time he bend over mucus come out of his mouth. We though respiratory infection? I got vet rx. But he wouldn't lay or roost. I think he couldn't breathe. I had him in. In a dog pen. I did everything I could. He died Friday. That was my sweetheart. I still don't know. But it look like stuff in her mouth. But crop wasn't big.

Isn't the risk of them aspirating really, really high when you make them vomit? I might suggest giving some oil, and then massaging the crop so it goes down. Did your chicken survive?

We usually rub out chickens with olive oil, and cook at 375. Joking aside we did try that no luck.

@Homestead: I'm so glad you were able to save her using this method (before the raccoon attack)!! I'm sorry for your loss, in the end! :( @Bonnie: You’re so right. We actually just lost our chicken last week and it was so sad. She had an impacted crop from some grass, but her crop was still soft / squishy and wouldn’t empty the fluids. We tried massaging and olive oil for 2 full days days and her crop wouldn’t empty. I was able to partially empty her crop by getting her to throw up, but I was so worried about aspiration that stopped halfway and didn’t empty it fully. It helped a lot, but I didn’t get her completely emptied out. Another full day of massaging and olive oil, but she was starting to deteriorate and her crop would still remain completely full. I couldn’t get it fully empty until a 2nd attempt to get her to throw up another day later. When her crop was finally completely cleared out after the 2nd time, it wasn’t a TON of grass, but it also wasn’t a tiny amount and she was still pretty young (about 10 weeks old). She aspirated a tiny bit getting her crop fully cleared and then it went downhill from there. She held on for another day and a half, but she then fully aspirated when she threw up on her own and passed. If I knew at the beginning what I know now, I think I would not have tried to get her to throw up and instead opted to surgically clear her crop. Not pretty/easy, but safer. There are a lot of videos on KZbin that show how to do this and I purchased all the necessary tools to do it. The only reason I don’t do it right away is because my husband was out of town and my kids aren’t old enough to help hold. I was going to do that in the first place, but all of the videos watching people do this was when the impaction was a hard, HUGE ball of obstruction. Hers was never like that, so I tried the throw up method and regret it. I mainly write this for anyone who is reading/watching this now is in an emergency situation and looking for advise. Exactly as this video shows, take your time and go VERY SLOW and give your chicken several breaks. Try and do very small amounts at a time and not too much at once. The 2nd time that gave us problems, it was so much coming up at once at the end and I didn't have a good way to cut it off and give her a break to breathe quickly enough. Just like this video says, sometimes you don't have much of a choice. No chicken vets around here (they're hard to find), and had already tried massaging and olive oil for days. It was either try this or they die.

I've done this many, many times to my hens without any problems and great success. And they always feel much better afterwards. It's a very common practice.

So sorry to hear that. It is very common with the chickens especially when the companies sell really cheap food for the chickens. A lot of our chickens got sick from tractor supply feed.

Yes it’s very hard to treat and sorry for your loss, that’s why we try to make these videos to inform and try to help people, then best thing to do is going to a farm vet but in this case we didn’t have one any wear near us so massaging was the best bet.

It acts like a vest pocket for the temporary storage of food. When a chicken picks up food with its beak, its tongue pushes the food to the back of its mouth into the esophagus, which is like a water slide from the mouth to the crop.
