Reminds me of those chick-a-dee magazines! There was one issue where it had an art project where you took two image from the magazine, stuck them back to back on a straw or stick and spun it around in your hand. It would "animate". The trick is really just to focus on a single point. It definitely helps to have a small window, as it forces the perspective.

For the animated one, you usually need to have one isolated little window and lower the frame rate either with a camera or a flashing light.

They’ve had those tangles since I was a kid. I have one still chilling on my nightstand at my moms house from the 2000s. What I did love as a kid were those tubes with the water and fish in them that just slid out of your hand. They looked like an unmentionable pleasure device but as a child I didn’t know any better. They were very satisfying but I doubt I could get away with playing with one at work

not sure if anyone has mentioned yet but the animation fidget spinner things don't work most of the time. however weirdly the problem for most people is being inside. taking them and spinning them fast under sunlight has a different effect and allows you to see the animation working. no idea why it works that way but it does from what I've seen.

it'll be to do with the rate at which your lights flicker. Things powered by electricity have a "framerate" of sorts, which affects how animations appear. The sun does not have the same issue.

Maybe for the spinners they need a flashing light. There’s an animation attraction at Disneyland or Disney California and they spin the table very quickly and once it reached a speed they flashed a light giving the illusion that the figures are animated
