Trying Virtual Desktop with the QUEST 3 in Automobilista 2 for the First Time - Wireless Sim Racing? While I always use a link cable with my Quest 3 for sim racing, today I am trying virtual desktop for the first time in Autmobilista 2. I will not be using a dedicated router and wanted to see if the quality would be acceptable to sim race on the Quest 3 wireless. You can also use Air Link as well for wireless gameplay but I chose to use Virtual Desktop as more people tend to like it and it offers a lot more options to tweak.
Sim Equipment I Currently Use:
- Thrustmaster T-GT II with Open Wheel Rim
- Thrustmaster T-LCM Load Cell Pedals
- VR Headsets: Quest 3 / PSVR2
- Consoles: PS5
- PC: RTX3080 / i7 10th Gen / 32GB RAM

I use virtual desktop. For me, its the ease of use, and confort. I just open virtual desktop, and in 5 seconds I'm looking at the desktop of my pc, and with mixed reality I can see the desktop floating in the air while being able to see the real room around me. Its less isolating and claustrophobic. I do iRacing with virtual desktop. On the VD streamer app on your pc just select VDXR in the OpenXR runtime. And then select OpenXR in the iRacing settings. No need to open Steam VR

So I use VD for sim racing because I just don't want to run a cable from my room (where my PC is) to my living room where my rig is (next room over). I don't normally feel noticeable latency and I bounce between AC and F1 23 often. Also some titles like F1 23 seem to run better in VD as opposed to Oculus link. Yes, obviously I have a usb cable running that length, but that's just a 2.0 cable. For link I'd have to be an extremely long high speed usb-c cable

The key factor is latency vs clarity. I am using Reverb G2 for a couple of years now for the occasional sim racing and Rift S couple of years prior. Both are DP PCVR headsets, so I have no experience with the stand alone headsets. Thinking of getting the Q3 now for the better lenses and wireless connectivity sinece the displays resolution is decent now and the computiong power of the headset is powerfull enough to handle it . As for your question, the cable connection for the quest eco system is only the transport for the data to get through between the pc and the headset - nothing else. The encoding is getting done on the PC and the decoding is on the headset. Therefore, for the user who has a good 2.4GHz wi-fi 6 (or 6e) router with a decent pc connected directly with lan cable ( 2.5Ghz lan is better ), and minimum interference on the wi-fi bandwith, there should not be in theory big difference in the clarity/latency ratio comparing to the oculus cable connection. I guess the real time difference is within 1-3 ms of latency head to head. This is an awesome price to pay for the wireless experience, given that the hardware specs are on par, as mentioned.

One question for you, how did you get the telemetry box to move in VR? I can’t select it at al so its stuck in the bottom right corner ( when I go into the HUD mode I just can’t move that one )?

Just tried VD and OG Assetto Corsa plays and looks great. But ACC is too much of a hog on VD to not hang vs link cable. Plus I've got link cable pretty much dialed in for sim racing that I appreciate the low latency and improved visual sharpness and clarity. Cable still wins out for sim racing for me, tho I will try out other pcvr games in VD going forward for wire free gaming

I've done a bit more testing and gone back to test the link cable. I definitely get a clearer picture in VD, I think because it uses better codecs ( esp the AVI codec ) compared to the link cable. I am on a 4090 and a Wifi 6 network running VD in godlike mode..but its rock solid and great experience. I did an hour on iRacing/AMS2 and battery dropped by 20%. If I was worried about it I could plug in a charger cable as well I guess.

Many folks won't be running a 4090, though, to take advantage of the codec.

you should bne using the 264+ codec for sim racing not the AVI , Also run it via VDXR runtime in the streamer

Also, how do you get OpenXR running with the link cable? Because that is my number one reason for using VD, it supports OpenXR which is a game changer for AMS2.

I don't use OpenXR with a link cable. I have been using the Oculus software.

Both native oculus (air)link runtime and VD support openxr nowadays, but at least for me Automobilista 2 wont open in openxr. Is there some trick?

3090, 5800x3d, Q3, WiFi6 router 5 feet from my head and Link cable is 10x clearer than VD in iracing regardless of the settings or runtime for me

I just bought Q3 and wanted to use link but ended up using VD. I would summarised Link as inconsistent. Some times it worked but mostly I have had some issues. Also setting up Link is so bad. Your profile is not saved and I feel like every game reacts different.. Also tried OculusTray tool that also didnt work all the time as I wanted. I wanted to use Link with Oculus mirror for recording but there was always some issues (stutters in game or in OBS, settings randomly changing back. Just pain). After last meta update I cant play ACC and Dirt 2 with OpenVR. AM2 didnt work before update at all. Also wanted use Link for flat gaming but you cant change your room for anything else than grey void. Link is missing AV1 support, openVR support is supper bad, dont support custom room or mixed reality (passthrough). Meta just doesnt care and that is why they didnt change it much from release. VD supports AV1, now OpenVR works fine even in AM2, Mixed reality for flat gaming or work. But yes there are some stuff I would like to see in VD. Support for Link cable :), some mirror for recording and support for multiple monitors. For simmracing I have still cable connected for power but run on VD. I am on 4090 R5900x with dedicated wifi 6 router which cost me 55$ and can do 2400 mb speed.

Interesting, never have an issues connecting with link or keeping a stable connection and that goes all the way back from the original quest.

So yyou cant run a wire from headset to pc and use VD...So what program do you use wired? because default the Gfx are poor.....VD is so clear on a 4090.

Graphics should not be poor with a cable. Make sure resolution is turned up and not to use default settings. Also, in the debug tool need to turn off dynamic bitrate and set the bit rate up higher. Can support up to 940mbs.

Running 200 MBs ( Wi-Fi 6 ). I get less compression than with the link cable tbh as it supports AV1.

Do you have Steam VR installed? I don't really use VD, but all I needed to do is launch Steam from VD, then run your Steam app.

Im not sure why but I'm having micro shutter on VD. I have my pc plug in direct to the router place right next to me, Im runing 120hz with Godlike mode on 3080TI and wifi 6e. Im also runing open xr and opencompsite. same setting but cable is just having better result for me because I can do 800mps but VD only have 400 with H264+. and sometime it only hit around 360mps. But the killer is still the micro shutters. No idea how to fix it. My router is tp link ax5400 6e

Not having one, I can't say for sure and what quality you would be happy with. Best thing is to try one and see if it meets your expectations and by from somewhere with a good return policy.

I run virtual desktop with my Quest 3 on every pcvr game. When sim racing I use a 8000mah battery plugged in to my quest and can get 5 to 6 hours of play. Air link and link cable is garbage. Also use the new virtual desktop openxr and it is amazing!!

I have read that for some people VD actually works smoother than a link cable. Secondly, some people have sim racing setup away from the computer, so wireless is beneficial. Thirdly, VD is so easy to use, I have it set to start up with my computer and it is ready in no time

I will say with a link cable is just as easy. Within seconds I am up and running. For those who have their rigs away from their PC, wireless option is definitely awesome.

well i can explain. even in a sim, not being tethered adds to the immersion. And battery is not a problem, i just use a powerbank, yes it's a wire but this wire goes to my pocket instead of my pc. It's the same as being wireless. My previous headset was a rift s edit: Well, i dont have a link cable, and its 80 something euros. Plus, i just want to be wireless, i dont only do sims in VR.

not being tethered adds more immersion, but you are tethered to a power bank lmao there is zero difference. The link cable is clipped to my sim rig, so that it stays out of the way, how is running a cable to your pocket any different.

​@@demkon sure that's your opinion, but this one is mine.. with the powerbank i am free.. i can look left, right, up down, upside down and there is no cable hindering me. I come from the Rift S, this little powerbank and the small cable ain't hindering me in the immersion, it is way better then a thick wire which has weight and you can feel that pulling on your head.

Just got Virtual Desktop after trying and trying for weeks to get A. Oculas link or B. Steam link. Both of them just dont give me a clear image at all. I got anoyyed and caved in.. $20 got me stupid clear and smoth AMS2 in VR. I went in with Brigjt and sunny day to clouds to some crazy fog in Le Mans. What a race .. what a race.. Virtual Desktop had set my bit rate to 70.. meanwhile in steam i tried every.. value for bit rate and it was just a tease.. Seemed like it was getting clear and then bam, back to blurriness Anyone reading this comment having issues with clearity and all intentions to PCVR Just fork over the $20 and game happy with a beautiful image.
