A few of statements here require correction: 1. CLEAR Plus does not bypass security line, CLEAR Plus is an expedited service that checks identity using biometrics at the kiosk without the need to take out ID documents (i.e. driver licenses, passport etc). You don't and cannot walk past the security line. 2. CLEAR Plus does not replace or supersede TSA PreCheck, they complement each other in the ID checking and security line. 3. As of today, CLEAR Plus membership fee is $199 per year, no longer at $189. 4. Both the AMEX Delta Skymiles Gold card and Chase United Explorer card DON'T cover a single penny as credit towards CLEAR Plus membership fee. Being a cardholder of either card reduces the fee to $159 instead of the full $199, but if you pay for the membership using either of these two cards, you will not be credited since this isn't a benefit of either cards. 5. The AMEX Hilton Honors Aspire card (not mentioned in video) covers the full CLEAR plus membership fee, just like the AMEX Platinum and Business Platinum cards.

At the airports where I frequently fly (JFK, LGA, LAX, SFO, DCA) Clear does allow you to bypass the entire line before the point where the officer checks your ID (which often allows bypassing a long line). After you pass that point, you go through the same process with everyone else of putting your carry on bags in the machine, and going through the scanner or metal detector, etc. Usually there is a Clear station for either TSA Pre or Regular. If the regular line is very short, it is possible that the Clear might not save any time. Clear (in my experience) is basically just paying money to often have a much shorter line.

@@morrispearl9981 You are right regarding CLEAR lets you bypass the ID check line and go straight to security check. In fact that is the main purpose of having CLEAR. The information given in the video said "bypass security line" which is false and misinformation, no one can bypass security check.

"Bypass security line" is definitely misleading. CLEAR is more of a front-of-the-line privilege, although that's now more accurately CLEAR + TSA Pre, with CLEAR alone being second-in-line if funneled through the same checkpoint.

Interview on arrival can be challenging if you have a US-based connection on your return, because you go through customs there and not your home airport. It was a bit of a squeeze for me during a connection in IAD, but was a complete failure for my daughter when she came back through YYZ (Toronto CBP preclearance) - we almost missed our flight and have nothing to show for it. DO NOT try this if connecting in Toronto unless you have a very long layover of probably more than 4 hours.

If you live near a Canadian border the other option is NEXUS. It gets you TSA, Global entry, the Nexus line driving to Canada and the short line flying into Canada, like GE. I used to travel to Canada for business once a week, and it saved me at least an hour going into and out of Canada each time. I went with a co-worker into Canada who did not have NEXUS and was able to go through customs, go to the car rental location and pick up the car and still had to wait for the co-worker to make it through customs.

Also, Global Entry interviews can now be automatically given when you return from your next international trip. It helped a couple of years ago but now we find they are often closed. The short lines are not always short, and no matter what so-called advantage I have, even with TSA Pre-check, it makes little difference. Just get to the airport early and deal with it. She now has to go through an interview, which is scheduled in October. So it will take a full year for the renewal. The saving grace is that since she applied before it expired, her old number has been extended (expired July 2024). I applied for my renewal at the beginning of the year, so we’ll see how it goes. If you don't plan to go international, Global Entry may not be worth it.... it really depends on your location and ability to get to an interview location. I was faced with several choices and ultimately took a day off, flew to Boston for my interview (you can pay an app to track openings at preferred locations), flew to Charlotte and back home. It made for a long day, but it would have been probably 5 hours driving, plus the interview, plus gas parking and meals etc... Sure I paid for the flights.... but not driving to/in/thru Philly, Baltimore, DC or PIttsburgh was 100% worth that. Ultimately, I wound up not going on the vacation that was initially planned for using Global Entry, but am looking at new ones. At least that's all a one and done thing and renewal can be 100% remote.

This video is good advice, except for the blanket statement, "Don't get TSA Precheck." While Global Entry is better, on paper, in practice it's not that straightforward. The big difference, as you point out, is the Global Entry interview, which can take much longer and require going out of your way for, versus the TSA Precheck screening which can be done at a variety of locations. Most Americans only travel internationally once or twice in their entire lifetimes. The reality is, for these Americans, and for the Americans who never fly internationally, the extra time spent arranging a global entry interview every 5 years is going to be more than the time they will end up saving. Even without taking into account the cost, TSA Precheck is probably the better value for most Americans. Georgia, for example, has only Global Entry one enrollment center for the entire state, at the ATL airport. There are TSA Pre-check locations scattered all over the state. Having to go to the airport just for the interview is a HUGE hassle for 90% of people living in the state. The only way it's convenient is if you're at the airport anyways. However, this means either 1) you were on a domestic flight and were able to schedule the interview for the same time, but that means you didn't have the benefit of precheck for that one flight because you didn't do the interview until the day of the flight (whereas someone could've done TSA Precheck ahead of time at a variety of Office Max/Office Depot locations near them and would have already had it for that flight), or 2) you're doing the interview on international arrival, which means you didn't get the benefit of PreCheck for your initial outbound flight because you couldn't do the interview until after you got back. Either way, you're losing the benefit of PreCheck for one trip automatically, so unless your use of Global Entry over those 5 years saves you more time than the extra hassle, PreCheck is better simply for that reason alone. I found it really weird that you acknowledge that the interview process can be a huge hassle for some people, but you fail to evaluate the actual impact for that additional hassle at all, and only focus on the potential time savings on the other side.

If you purchase Global Entry directly from TSA it includes Pre-Check. Use caution for US Gov employees like myself because I had an existing TSA Pre Check through my work (FBI) due to my security clearance level. But if you purchase Global or receive it as an award from a credit card they will attempt to remove your work Pre Check which you should keep for official travel. Just something to think about. Clear is often the longest line at least in ATL. Digital Id was the shortest and fastest until recently where it seems everyone has now signed up for it. Basic TSA Pre is starting to look like the best deal with everyone trying to jump the line in some other way. I'll probably cancel Clear next refresh cycle. Global entry used to be faster and more convenient at ATL also until they decided to move the kiosks to the far other side of the huge immigration hall and so by the time you walk way past everyone else in the normal lines and back again to the exit doors it is often faster to just go through the normal line. It's a shame they have these expedited services and then hinder them significantly for no clear reason. Global Entry kiosks used to be the first line on the way into and out of the immigration hall.

What prevents a Clear employee being bribed to allow someone through security since usually all you might have to show to the TSA agent is an ID, if at all? When I use Clear, I'm escorted to the TSA agent and they usually just let me pass upon verbal confirmation by the Clear employee 90% of the time. Rarely do I have to show ID or boarding pass to the TSA. This means that anyone could bribe a Clear agent and get on a plane needing only a valid boarding pass -- anybody's boarding pass -- since the gate agents no longer check IDs.

We already have TSA, how does that work if we apply for Global Entry ?
@timol437

I know this is a "well duh" thing, but you should have mentioned you will have to have a valid passport for Global Entry, along with checking requirements as to having a clear background. Friend of mine applied (ages ago) for Global Entry and got denied due to a college pot bust and I think the CBT kept his processing fee too. Know the rules before playing the game....

Hi! Thank you for your informative and interesting platform. We have TSA pre- check and also got Global Entry. We didn’t know that Global Entry covers TSA precheck. So are you saying that when my TSA renewal is up, as long as my global entry is still valid, I do not need to renew my TSA precheck? Unfortunately, we did not take advantage of our credit card to pay for it. Thanks for your response.

If you have global entry, tsa pre check is included. In your case you possibly have two KTNs. So when your tsa pre check that you purchased before getting global entry expires, you are still good until your global entry expires. I would recommend changing all the numbers on your airline companies and use the KTN you received for your global entry

I had Clear. I also have Precheck. The Precheck line, even a long line, is faster than clear. Clear offered free for a year with the AMEX card I showed them. Turns out the clear agent was incorrect and my opinion is that he knew he was lying. After a couple of months I asked for a clear refund. They gave it to me. At this point I think all they wanted was my biometrics.

TSA Precheck is not 100% guaranteed there is always that chance that you will be selected for regular screening. Usually not getting it is random and other times it depends on timing as well as how many have processed through the Precheck prior to your checking in.
