Tsai Ing-Wen's strategic gamble on US-Taiwan ties | Insight | Full Episode

On July 18, US President Donald Trump approved the biggest arms sale to Taiwan since the start of his Presidency almost 3 years ago. The $2.2 billion in arms deal includes the sale of Abrams tanks and Stinger surface-to-air missiles. And in August, the US State Department approved another sale of $8 billion of F-16 fighter jets to the island state.
Though this is consistent with the history of US support for Taiwan’s defense, it also shows Washington’s willingness to confront Beijing even as US-China relations are at their lowest on account of trade war. China has threatened to impose sanctions on the main US firms involved in the sales and launched large-scale military drills close to the Taiwan straits.

It's not so much that it is independent *of* China, but that it *is* China - Taiwan is the Republic of China (ROC): the sole legitimate government of China for the past 100 years and needs to be re-recognized as such by the nation-states of this world and for the allegiance of Tibet, Inner Mongolia, Manchuria, Eastern Turkestan, Hong Kong and Macao to be switched back to it. To best address & resolve the question of independence (and to induce the switching of allegiance), it's actually the *ROC* that should make the first move: by introducing an amendment in its constitution that not only reaffirms its rightful claim over the mainland, but guarantees autonomy to each of these regions (and to the island of Taiwan itself) with the option to enact a referendum for independence and/or associate membership in a post-union confederation analogous to the Commonwealth, following the restoration of the ROC in Beijing. All efforts, worldwide, should be focused on bringing this latter outcome about first. Then the "sardines crowded in a sardine can" situation of Taiwan (of having both the provincial government and ROC cooped up together) can be removed, in preparation of making room for the later actions. And it should be focused on bringing this about by enacting a 100% boycott and quarantine of the PRC, following its de-legitimization by the revocation of formal recognition, and to revoke all instruments of debt held by the PRC as compensation for the damages caused by the pandemic unleashed from within its borders as a result of the wilful perfidy in its mismanagement of the outbreak.
