"Shumi Maritsa" was the Bulgarian national anthem from 1886 until 1947. The music was derived from the German folk song "Wenn die Soldaten durch die Stadt marschieren" that was very popular in Bulgaria in the mid-19th century. The original text was written by Nikola Zhivkov, a head teacher in Veles (now in North Macedonia). The lyrics were edited many times, most notably in 1912 by the poet Ivan Vazov. The title refers to the Maritsa river. It literally translates to "Maritsa makes noise" but the connotation is closer to "Maritsa roars".

I used to be a monarchist myself but the Bulgarian branch of the Saxe-Coburg and Gotha dynasty in its aesthetics and style of ruling especially under Ferdinand was a typical 19th century European bourgeois-constitutional royal house with no relation to our medieval monarchical tradition or really any native Bulgarian tradition in general. Under Boris III's personal regime from 1934 to 1943 there was a significant break from that with an attempt to "nativize" the monarchy by connecting it with an authoritarian, traditionalist form of Bulgarian nationalism and the monarch himself was a brilliant statesman who deeply loved this land and people, but after communism came and fell in the 2000s his son Simeon II entered politics, forming a govt in alliance with the former communists and a bunch of mostly ethnically Turkish oligarchs and after suffering a resounding defeat in the next election for crushing the high people's hopes to this day with his rhetoric and activities he doesn't show any real sympathy towards the reactionary or nationalist Right, he's more than satisfied with weak ceremonial European monarchies existing in a globalist international millieu and doesn't actually even actively work for his own bloodline's restoration.

"Царь" is an abbreviated form of "цѣсарь" which is the Old Bulgarian transliteration of "caesar" and in the medieval and early modern world was recognized as fully equivalent to "emperor", being the primary title of the rulers of the First and Second Bulgarian as well as the (Muscovite) Russian Empire from Ivan to Terrible to Peter the Great. However as a consequence of the latter formally ditching it in favour of the more "Western-sounding" "imperator", its "value" diminished and it became possibly for the clearly not imperial ruler of the small Balkan nation-state of Bulgaria to adopt it upon declaring his country's independence in 1908. Just like with the Greek "basileus", which is conventionally translated as "king" for the monarchs of Ancient Greek polities and of the modern nation of Greece but as "emperor" for those of the Greek-speaking Eastern Roman/Byzantine Empire.
