Aarón browser before streaming, you had digital purchases, getting on the music shows, radio play, cds(although by this time those were on the way out). Now the self reinforcing hype AND monetization comes from youtube/spotify and the streaming services. Around this time was when iTunes started carrying kpop songs, before then they weren’t even available. So, views mattered but they were to support the monetization channels.

This is what I loved about K-pop when I first heard the genre (in 2011). K-pop was all about enjoying the moment, happiness & charisma. you know the thing about kpop is that in 1 year everything can change in the industry. When this came out, secret got a bit of hate because it was considered overly sexy. Didn't stop the song from being successful but at the time cute concepts were in stopping them from gaining a broader audience. Now in 2014 sexy concepts are in and this coming out would do so wonderful in the charts because it manages to be more on the powerful sexy cool side.
