There’s not an iota of doubt that Rahman is perhaps the greatest music composer of our times. But this particular song has baffled me to the point of no return where I cannot cease the need to refrain from listening to it . Everytime I listen to it, it goes on for hours on repeat. And this is a piece I did not comprehend at first only to be completely enamoured by it now. Rahman has this freakish ability to control the highs and lows of a song because of which he’s able to dictate and sway our emotions like no one else . He knows where the song needs to flow freely , at what precise moment would a crescendo immediately transfix the listener and how to allow the soundscape to have space for both the music and the vocals without disrupting the harmonies. And one can notice that he’s not being impetuous with his creations . He’s sculpting his music for posterity rather than aiming to create just for the sake of creation: something that both the young and old bloods should learn. I wish Anirudh could only atleast attempt to create something from his own mind and not sample the whole song for commercial success and someone like Ilaiyaraaja should take more time in creating a song as his music ,although his own creation, has become increasingly repetitive in pattern, soundscape and at times even outdated. Rahman on the hand is still breaking boundaries through Maidaan , Chamkila , Aadujeevitham , Raayan , Ponniyin selvan and all the other movies he’s part of whether it is through his songs or his scores. He’s operating at an unreal level of creativity which is only getting better and will take atleast a decade or two for the current audience to fathom, just like how songs and scores of CCV, 24, mariyaan , endhiran , 2.0, Ai , Ranjhanna, Tamasha , Mohenjo daro etc.. are finding its audience now .
