Hi Ms. Amber!! Just wanted to let you know that I have been binging for videos for the past 2 weeks preparing for the math tsi (which I was sooo unprepared for bcz ive been out of school for a bit) and because of your amazing teaching skills and teaching style I went from completely lost to pretty confident in my math skills again and yesterday I PASSED IT!! Dont mean to make this too long but I just wanted time to sincerely thank you for your hard work and let you know that you are changing peoples lives!! You are the only reason I passed and i’m so thankful to you!!

@@Maryam07 There are more than 1 answer but all those answer are just pieces of a whole 100%. Like 5/18 was the answer we got for NOT getting 35 cents, but it's just a piece of the whole 100%...it's only 27.78%. Using 1 represents that 100% just like 5/18 could represent 27.78% Comparing a simple equation like "19 + ___ = 100" helped me understand a little better. I have one part of the equation so, I can just subtract 19 from 100 to get my answer (sorry this is late lol, hope it made sense)

Why does the 1 equal 18 over 18?
@makeitmakesense15042 жыл бұрын
If you divide 18/18 it is equal to 1.
@AzureKite1912 жыл бұрын
@@makeitmakesense1504 but why is the answer 13/18? I don’t understand how the 1 becomes 18/18
@makeitmakesense15042 жыл бұрын
@@AzureKite191 probability is out of 100%. So because the denominator is 18, 100% of 18 would be 18/18.And that is equal to 1.
@makeitmakesense15042 жыл бұрын
For example. If I told you 1/2 kids pass a math test and I asked you to find out how many do not pass. You would take 100% (the total amount of all the kids) subtract the amount of kids that did pass and you would get the amount of kids that didn’t pass. Because you can’t take a percentage and then subtract a fraction, you can write 100% as the number 1, or you can write it as 2/2 which is equal to 100%. Now that you have a fraction 2/2 you can subtract 1/2 and get 1/2 or the amount of students who didn’t pass. 100% asa fraction is whatever the denominator is, the numerator should be the same number. In the example of the video, 18 was the denominator, so 100% as a fraction would be 18/18.

i dont understand why you would look for the probability of coins total, that would not equal 35 cents
@makeitmakesense1504 Жыл бұрын
That's a great question! The reason I chose to do it this way was simple: There are multiple ways to get two coins that are at least 35 cents: 1st way- pick a dime,then a quarter 2nd way- Pick a quarter then a dime 3rd way, pick a quarter then another quarter. But there is only one way to get two coins that are not equal to 35 cents: pick a dime and then pick a dime. So instead of getting lost in the finding the probability of multiple combinations of getting "at least 35 cents", I chose to find the probably of the only one way to "not get at least 35 cents" and subtract that from the total number of possibilities.

this makes no sense to me, why does 1/1 = 18/18?????
@makeitmakesense1504 Жыл бұрын
That's an excellent question. All probability is out of 100%. 100% can be shown in fraction form by having the numerator and the denominator being the same. For example: If I had a pizza with 8 slices, and I ate 100% of that pizza. I ate 8/8 slices. So in this case, if 18 is the denominator, 18/18 would represent 100%.

Great question: Here is an answer that I gave other students who asked something similar: The reason I chose to do it this way was simple: There are multiple ways to get two coins that are at least 35 cents: 1st way- pick a dime,then a quarter 2nd way- Pick a quarter then a dime 3rd way, pick a quarter then another quarter.
