Win - win for TSMC and Arizona? TSMC will lose money on this investment, big time. They agreed to build the Fab assuming billions in subsidies, but the conditions the US govt put on those subsidies resulted in TSMC (and Samsung) not applying for the subsidies. When (and if) the fab starts producing chips the production cost will be 2X higher than in Taiwan. Apple, Qualcom, Nvidia will refuse to pay the higher price. On top of that there is a glut of chips because China is ramping up production like there's no tomorrow. This glut will last 5+ years. Let's hope Ariz get something out of this because TSMC will lose its shirt. It doesn't help that many members of Congress will want to Bomb TSMC in Taiwan as soon as this fab is finished and producing chips.
@melchizedek077
@melchizedek077 10 ай бұрын
I am not sure this is completely correct. TSMC did apply for the chips act it is just that the government hasn't paid out anything to anyone yet because they don't do anything fast. Ramping up production in chips it not like any other industry if they start it now the capacity will come online years later. I don't think TSMC will lose its shirt with the project. They are a very big company and the ecosystem for chips is well established in the area. A better question would be if TSMC will want to keep running it years from now when it needs upgrading.

And yet TSMC came to America for our customer demand, and market opportunity tsmc was considered forced to set up a factory in the United States because of political considerations and to bring advanced microchip production closer to the United States and away from any potential standoff with China. TSMC still had to make a decision on where they want their next plant to be outside of Taiwan anddd they chose The U.S and complain about it lol

Just admit it, Arizona chosen site is stupid. Why not build the plant in Georgia, Mississippi, or Louisiana with high water resource? Also, labor in those states could be rectified from strong Midwest states with highly skilled labor force in auto/basic manufacturing. Building the plant in Arizona was a signal it was never going to be a big player plant world scale. It is also hard to put skilled labor in Arizona when the surrounding states are large swathes of barren land. The whole plan is a joke. I don't expect it to be anything but a handicap porcelain pet project meant to show US ingenuity when it all proves is how dumb leadership is in this country.

You know, "strengthen American leadership in microchips" doesn't really fit the reality that America desperately need TSMC to build something Americans don't know how to build. Also the person you rely on for something isn't the best person to ask for help in reducing reliance on that person.

The technology that TSMC uses was originally US tech that the original founder learned at Texas Instruments when he worked there. The US can easily make the same chips, the problem is it isn't cost effective to make them here. It's easier to give TSMC the blueprint for the chip you need and have them make it at a lower cost, allows better profit margins and lower cost to the consumer. US priced itself out of the industry
@vlhc4642
@vlhc4642 11 ай бұрын
@@Chevymonster203 Lower cost? TSMC is the most expensive fab in the world buddy, they're most expensive because they're the only one who can make 3nm right now. Texas Instrument is the cheap fab with low end tech... US can barely make "7nm" chips right now with "Intel 7", and even Intel themselves like all other American firms has to pay TSMC a huge premium to fab chips smaller than 7nm. And that's just wafers, America is even more behind in packaging, America is history's biggest display of Dunning Kruger effect right now.

This project is remarkably important. Not just for Arizona, but for the US and other western and western-minded countries. TSMC produce chips using a process they developed. Many chips including those made by Intel and AMD using what is known as an "11 nanometer" process. TSMC chips utilize a "7 nanometer" process, which allows them to put many more transistors on a single chip. Their chips are integrated into a wide range of items from cars to computers, and they also make up the "chipset" on the main board of PC's. They're remarkably important to our technology, and right now they're made in Taiwan, and They may be "nationalized" by mainland china. By "moving" Taiwanese labor here we're essentially granting amnesty to a bunch of folks REALLY important to the project, and it may end up being crucial to our retaining this technology for the US and others. I've never been in a Union, but have indeed benefitted from their good efforts. 👍 But Union brothers and sisters need to work with them to insure the future of projects like this one, not just for putting bread on the table, but for maintaining access to an important, integral technology that benefits everyone. -My two cents...

Please do your research. TSMC makes chips for Apple, Qualcomm, AMD, Broadcom, NVIDIA, MediaTek, Intel, Marvell, NXP and Unisoc. Most of these companies do not operate chip fabs any more and do not want to, only Intel is still constructing wafer and chip fabs. These chips are used in pretty much everything, including US military hardware. If China invades Taiwan, the US and the world are in big hurt. Taiwan is a key US ally. Would you rather them make the chips in Taiwan or in the US where they would provide US jobs?
