With all those proximity and cavity effects, it makes you wonder how effective all of the tuning adjustments really are once the unit is closed up (since the adjustments are made when it is open...)

Cant wait for the noise figure video. I want to learn about noise matching for LNAs, how can we use tuners and noise figure analyzer to optimize LNA noise figure. On the PNA-X I have seen many exotic measurment types related to noise on that instrument, for example something called noise correlation. Can we touch on those topics too? Also can we learn about defining and measuring LNA sensitivity. I don't understand also how adding input attenuation raises the noise floor on a spec A. What happens if we just keep adding attenuators??? Truly I am interested in LNAs for radio telescopes and deep space networks

If i design something like that and give this design to production, they will fly from halfway across the world to kick my ass. This is a nightmare to assemble ever for a one off prototype. I cant imagine how qualified the production staff need to be in order to manufacture this.

Excellent step through of repair process. Perfect education about preserving dut with signal control. Wonderful demonstration of verifying data sheet specifications. I think this shows how mini circuits was a quality company before they switched to putting everything into a single chip. They published the real performance of the product.

It's awesome to see this "low frequency" amplifier internal design, with all those capacitors and inductors around clearly visible as individual components. In higher frequency stuff you often may forget about all those additional L,C and Z's all around the "useful" circuit since they are much smaller or often even part of PCB/chip design. Also idea for future video, perhaps, an introduction to the typical performance parameters of RF amplifiers. IP3, PSAT and other RF "speak" might be bit confusing for junior starting engineers :)

6:30 Varactors? I had a double take. Don't you mean variable caps or varicaps? It's a nice looking amp with special eBay pricing, I checked ;-) I'd have been interested in seeing a reversed circuit diagram but can sort of guess what it looks like. Wow, 35 watts quiescent.

@@notstorm208 varactors are diodes used as voltage controlled capacitors, the devices in the video are mechanically adjustable capacitors, I think Shahriar just misspoke

What is the date code of that amp. That is really old vertion - propably one of the first revision. There was at list 2 more revision of that amp. I used couple of this over the years. I do not remember if any of the fail on my bench. As a preventive measure I always used sfety attenuator on input, to prevent accidental overdrive.

@@Thesignalpath (O)IP3, TOI and IM3 are things I never came across. It's totally fine, that you did not explain those things in detail. Your videos are obviously focused towards RF topics, whereas I come from a digital- and power-electronics background. Still: Thanks for asking!

Prety goood job on the measurement. One note: for the intermodulation it will be grate to have at list 18dB margine between setup and the DUT readings. If I am correct that give wors case better then 0.1dB error. I wonde what is the "sweet spot" input power for intermodulation on the Siglen SA. Most of Keysight SA that around -36dBm.

Check the bias currents. Someone may have fiddled with the adjustment pots trying to improve linearity and overdid it.

Isn't it kinda bad that it has so much more gain than it says on the box? It seems like if you weren't careful you could end up frying frying a front end by hitting it like 10dB harder than you expected

@@witeshade You should be setting up to the saturation with decent margin, not the gain which typically varies much more.
