This could have worked if it was solid ground and not sand. Sand is less resistant against water. You could prepare the scenario some days before to emulate the ground's real resistance of water. Just soaking it a bit until the dirt gets more solid.

All the Dam breach experiments have shown that Lego bricks are not a true water barrier. Fun to watch though.

Given how the sand fill of the walls compacted, would it have been better to have partially flooded the wall before adding sand in order to remove the air pockets that the water would find its way through? Likely not a perfect solution, but better?

considering that you're working with something like a 1/64 scale here, you'd need much smaller and more dense materials to properly simulate a dam like this.
