I got tears in my eyes when watching this. I am a local Thai. I live not too far from Khao Lak. I lost two friends there. A teacher and students, at a primary school near the beach, practiced traditional dance for a coming show on Monday were swept by tidal waves too. Thousands of people died in the disaster both local and tourists at Khao Lak. At that time I was a research student in Japan, and was on a holiday in Kyoto on that day. A hotel receptionist watching TV and told me that there was a tsunami in Thailand. At first, I was stunned by what happened. I couldn't believe there would be tsunami in the Indian Ocean or Southeast Asia. Two years later, I returned to my hometown, I could see the ruins of the villages, houses and hotels. A few years later, I traveled to Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The city had been recovered. New building were constructed. But I can feel the pain of the people there. According to Joint Evaluation of the International Response to the Indian Ocean Tsunami: Synthesis Report, 227,898 died in 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. May their souls rest in peace.

I remember this very day all too well. I remember being with my family at a hotel in Malaysia. I was only 12 and had gone swimming with my cousins and when I came back to the room my parents eyes were glued to the TV. The news about this played for hours on end. I couldn't comprehend just how devastating it was back then, but watching just how monstrous the tsunami was at 32 years old makes me feel so, so grateful just how safe and sound I was with my family, hundreds of miles away from the tsunami. That said, I've always known how disastrous the 2004 tsunami and earthquake both were. This was so gut wrenching to watch. So, so, heartbreaking.

Before this tsunami, we Indonesian citizens did not know what a tsunami was (only a few) and what to do when facing this disaster. From this incident, it can be concluded that there is a lack of education about natural disasters even though our region is in a disaster-prone area. It’s still fresh in my mind. That day, 20 years ago -when I was 10, our class went to a beach. When we arrived at the beach the sea water seemed to recede and many fish were stranded on the beach. We were so happy and play volley ball almost in the mid of the sea (far from the beach). We didn’t know that was when tsunami hit Aceh. I heard the news right after we got back from the beach and I remember I got goosebumps all over my body and my knee got weak because I lived in an island nearby Aceh (but luckily our region was safe) and we were at the beach 😶 I can’t imagine the fear that Aceh people experienced back then. Rest in peace to the beautiful souls we lost to Tsunami 🥀 May god always bless and protect all of us ♥️

The scary thing is after the tsunami the water will go rushing back to the ocean. So if you are not injured or killed when it hits you are not in the clear because many people are swept to sea when the water returns to the ocean and/or killed by all of the debris in the water on the way back.

The Baiturrahman Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh is a symbol of resilience and hope after the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Despite the catastrophic disaster, the mosque remained mostly intact while much of the surrounding area was destroyed. It became a refuge for many during the disaster, sheltering people from the surging waters. The mosque's robust construction helped it withstand the tsunami's impact, symbolizing strength and divine protection. Many locals and survivors consider its survival miraculous. Great documentary! But it was sad to see that India, the country with the third most number of lives lost (12,000 almost double that of Thailand) and devastation was completely ignored except a couple of scenes. Disaster and loss of human lives is not a competition but as someone from the region it felt very disrespectful to the people who lost their lives and who survived in the region..

I’m sorry for the lives lost in India, i still remember the horrible videos from there, but I believe this documentary focused on the events that happened right before and right after the tsunami within about an hour or so. Trivia: During the December 26th earthquake, there was a marathon competition on that fateful morning in Banda Aceh. The video where stacks of speakers falling down in front of a cameraman? It was shot on the marathon's starting line, located at one of Banda Aceh's public parks.

I didn't know much about the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. Now I can imagine how terrible it was! Actually, I'm a japanese, and I experienced the Grate East Japan earthquake. Its Tsunami killed many people too. 😢 We should tell about these terrible disaster to the next generations.
