I can't even imagine the titanic power of the rupturing fault that it could push up a wall of seawater. Nature's power is unbelievable.

The energy released by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake in Japan was around 9,320 gigatons or the equivalent of 9,320,000 megatons of TNT, 600 million times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb explosion and the energy released by the 2004 Aceh earthquake was around 9,600 gigatons, equivalent to 9,600,000 megatons or 640 million times the energy of the Hiroshima bomb. Honestly, it's hard for me to imagine 🙂🙂

Brilliantly clear; I will be pointing folks here when I get asked about "why the sea withdraws ahead of a tsunami", and have to try to explain "it doesn't always"; if your are on a coast and feel an earthquake, go high, quickly - dont wait to see what the sea does in an attempt to guess if a tsunami is on the way. Water is not "sucked back into the oncoming wave" (thats just nonsensical physics), but the waves depend on the relative movement of the sea floor as animated here. And I learned about splay faults too (d@mn, they're nasty). Today is a good day for education, thank you :).

Published on Mar 26, 2014 Earthquakes Subduction-zone mega-thrust earthquakes, the most powerful earthquakes in the world, can produce tsunamis through a variety of structures that are missed by simple models including: fault boundary rupture, deformation of overlying plate, splay faults, and landslides during earthquakes. From a hazards viewpoint, it is critical to remember that tsunamis are multiple waves that often arrive on shore for many hours after the initial wave.In this animation we explore different tsunami-producing mechanisms by examining three famous earthquakes: Japan 2011, Chile 2010, and Alaska 1964:
@Leah4842 Жыл бұрын
Regarding the 1964 Alaska Earthquake, George Plafker of the USGS documented a third oblong zone of vertical displacement. This was an inboard zone of relatively minor uplift, northwest of the zone of subsidence, which in turn was inboard from the zone of large uplift. Progressing northwest, away from the primary fault, each zone exhibits vertical displacement in the opposite sense from the previous zone. (Comment by Jim Rosenbaum).

Yea that was similar to the one in Japan. She gave one example each of the epicenter being undersea, coastal, and inland.

@@BrandyHein no it's not. Finite fault by USGS suggest that this earthquake (Sumatra-Andaman 2004) displacement is similar to Alaska earthquake 1964.

@@oskha1815 yes 4:23 the splay fault uplift made the tsunami bigger and larger, it's like a double uplift, that's why the tsunami is very destructive and destroyed many countries bordering the indian ocean.

But does the oceanic plate move down at all? Looked like only the overriding plate gets displaced.
@charlesmayes36925 жыл бұрын
The oceanic plate moves down slowly over time pulling the continental plate with it, causing the continental plate to store energy.
@Akrplinn3583 ай бұрын
@@charlesmayes3692yes it releases a lot of energy but is magnitude 9 equivalent to a million megatons? for example, I once read that the energy released by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was 9,600 gigatons, which is equivalent to 9.6 million megatons of TNT.

Japan's quake was so powerful it not only moved the entire country of Japan cm's, it also fucked with Earth's rotation. Extending the day by 0.2 seconds. From a scientific pov, that's crazy
@IstasPumaNevada3 жыл бұрын
Right effect, wrong amount: it was 0.0000018 seconds (1.8 microseconds). Still crazy it was enough to measure though.

If we count all the earthquakes that had occurred since the earth formed, that could probably add up to days 🤯

Generaly that Seven outer planets that generate the natural disaster on earth, likes Tide wave, heatwave, Sonic boom/big explosion, mount eruption, earthquake, tornado, hurricane or ect. The single effective way to lessen the danger earthquake and mount eruption is to connect Makkah with Antartic, Tuamoto with Artic, and poles itself through Atlantic with magnetics materials. This Last link also can lessen the danger tornados and hurricane and at the same time yield giant energi from the Earth truthfully is the nature dynamo of big electrics. Doing reduction the danger by using the atomic bomb explosion and or injection of water into the Earth is irrational and useless
