That's because the style of play has changed they play closer to the table and force backhand rallies. Back then it was automatic that you step back after first stroke.

Zhang may have been a bit cocky before. But now he is much more calm and less arrogant. Most young players when they win their big opens express their feelings majorly and Zhang was no exception. Zhang isn't what his reputation seems like in this video. Despite the fact that he played exceptionally well

Man I wish today's top players showed at least a fraction of the emotion that Zhang Jike showed back then. Harimoto celebrates a lot of his points but he kinda overdoes it a bit and I think he does it more for the mental game.

Jike in this tournament best the last 2 world champions in his first wttc, something which haven't been done before, while I do think Ma Long is greater, he didn't take his opportunities the first time, which is what I really think made Jike so likeable

Kevin, Poor Ma Long being young and ran into his nemesis. If not, the Great Ma Long may have won 5 or 6 WTTC Singles. Ma Long usually came out on top against Zhang Jike.

@@benthekeeshond545 Both are great players and Ma Long regards ZJK as his sporting idol. ZJK was mentally strong for big stage and was undefeated at major stage from his first WTTC until his lost to Fang Bo in 2015 WTTC. That is incredible for a player who was only going through the maturation stage of his game. Ma Long on the other hand needed more time to mentally mature. And would ML win the WTTC back then if he didn't play Wang Hao? I'm not so sure. Even when he didn't play Wang Hao in 2014 World Cup, he still lost to ZJK. I don't think ML would beat ZJK at world stage back then if he doesn't have the confident he has now.

@@fortitude1208Reverse serve and good backhand was always WLQ's cryptonite. That's why he lost to Schlager in 2003. Perhaps if they were contemporaries he would outlast him simply because he had no injuries and ZJK had a body of glass just like Liu Guozheng who was considered the next big thing for a while.

@@pham1020 ZJK is more complete but WLQ was true killer in prime and i think he could win in this game ZJK 10 years younger and he born to this era (speed glue ban era), in the contrary WLQ was trying to adjust his play to this era after 30 when plastic balls appeared and ZJK could not adjust game and retired (maybe he was lazy to adjust)

Nah. Looks like a bad match up for Wang. He’s got no backhand playing against someone who is too consistent on backhand, without the weakness in his forehand. I bet ZJK would’ve gotten more wins regardless of era.

Zhang Jike is the fastest player of all time to win the grand Slam. I think thats pretty impressive. Wang Liquin won 3 World championship titles, Zhang already has two. You cannot say one player is better than the other if they were "the same age" because they have different playstyles. All you can say is that Zhang is superior to Wang Liquin at the time of the match, although Wang has now retired. He had a great career.

***** Indeed he is, but that does not make him the "better player". Ma Long didn't play in the Olympics because he was injured, not because he wasn't good enough. The point is, it takes a lot of courage and mental strength to win a world championships (the biggest event of all). Ma Long hasn't managed to do this as of yet, let alone a grand slam. He has the technical ability, but for him to even have a chance of winning such events he must get over his fear of playing Chinese players in the WTTC, Wang Hao being his biggest rival.
