Since it has a GPS, you can use the transmitter to send its GPS position, and use the receiver to calculate the distance between the received position and the receiver's GPS position.

V Ng I had thought about that. Maybe I’ll use the haversine formula in the code.

nice overview, wondering what kind of power consumption you're getting with LoRa and GPS enabled. Thinking of using these for light industrial use , and wondering if using the ESP32 deepSleep and waking every 1 hr the 18650 would last a reasonable time?

You get approx 24h use time from one battery charge. Solar or usb extends the use time significantly

Great video. Thumbs up and thanks for the reference to the new board. One recurring issue though is that a lot of the antennas that are out there are actually not even close to being tuned for the band that they are supposed to operate on. I wonder how well the antennas on those boards really work at 915MHz? Of course your testing indicates that they are at least reasonably usable, but it's possible and probably even likely that there is a lot to be gained with a well matched antenna...

@ProtoG426 жыл бұрын
It is a microcontroller with WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and a long range radio transceiver. There are countless applications for something like this. Sensor networks, robot controllers, gps locator beacons, and so on.
@XenoContact6 жыл бұрын
Oh I see, now that sounds very practical ! Would the radio transceiver response time allow for it to accurately drive an RC plane over long range(>20km) ?

I just had a revelation in this regard: 4 of my TTGO T3_V1.6 ESPs require /dev/ttyUSB0 as a com port. 4 others did not work, and a TTGO Meshtastic GPS LoRa ESP refused to communicate with the computer. Then I tried connecting via /dev/ttyAMAO. it appears that Lilygo switched from CP2102 serial chips to CH340s at some point. open up your IDE without the ESP plugged in, see what ports are available, then plug in the ESP. either /dev/ttyUSB0 or /dev/ttyAMAO will show up. use that port. anybody knows where the I2C port pins really are, speak up, please

KZbin’s Andreas Spiess got 200km on his with a proper set of the little antennas. Sounds like yours aren’t the right ones.
@ProtoG426 жыл бұрын
His videos are great but that was direct line of sight and a world record that he broke by carefully choosing the two highly elevated points. He also had to use the SF12 reduced data rate of 250bits/s to accomplish that range. Depending on your application, that may not be acceptable. The example from the video is using the default data rate of 11,000bit/s which is a lot more data and the default transmitter power. The SF12 he used is also a much longer transmitted pulse than the default SF7 which will give you better range at the expense of max payload. You could definitely use better antennas than this but there are a lot of options for improving range through software. You can adjust TxPower, Spreading Factor, and Signal Bandwidth as well as other configurable settings.
