TTM Update: L&W 0-4-0 #1 Fully Restored & Ready For Service (6-2-17)

TTM's little 0-4-0 steam locomotive is ready for service. The locomotive is set to make its first public appearance sometime around the 4th of July, but no exact date has been set

The locomotive is the former Comal Power Plant switcher. That's the power plant adjacent to Landa Park in New Braunfels. It's job was to bring materials and supplies (mostly coal) from a yard alongside the Mopac mainline. It operated there from 1925 to 1929, when the plant switched from coal to natural gas. The locomotive sat dormant till 1964 when it was acquired by the Texas Transportation Museum and until 1968 operated it on the Texas Transportation Company (the railroad that served the Pearl Brewery) mainline. It was later moved to, and briefly operated at, the current site. Its nice to see it operating again, hopefully for many years to come!

The track it is on is just a side track. The mainline that we give train rides on is about 1/3 mile long, straight out then straight back

Question. Where the heck is the fuel for that engine? No tender, and no other tank for oil...

#1 is an oil burner, and the oil tank is in the cab with the engineer

For bigger steam engines you would need an engineer and a fireman, but with an engine this small all you need is a well trained engineer

If memory serves me correctly, the oil tank is on the fireman's side of the cab, occupying the area where the fireman's seat would be.

Yes, it is. The original plan was to run the #1 the weekend before the 4th (the 1st or thre 2nd) but a little more work needs to be done before then. We aren't sure of the date for the #1's first public run but it should still be sometime this month

Baldwin, the #1 was built almost 100 years ago in 1925

Philadelphia Pennsylvania,Baldwin Locomotive Works,July of 1925,and that is a 47,000 Pound (18 Ton) 0-4-0 Steamer.

Yes, the timing was off but they had to test the locomotive in order to see what still needed to be done to it (if anything). New restorations are rarely perfect
