My 99 year old Dad found this group on KZbin about six months ago and I’ve not seen him this happy in YEARS. He played sax in three bands after retirement at 55, and finally had to give it up ten years ago because his fingers no longer worked properly. Might have been the saddest time of his life - not performing anymore. Thank you Tuba Skinny for putting a smile on my Dad’s face again! Much love from Atlanta.

God bless him! I am a 73 year old guitar player. The friend I used to jam with 20 years ago died and in depression I gave it up. Well he willed me his guitar and I recently got back into it. I found that my old fingers that used to work when I was younger no longer work right lol. Some practice and I am close to where I was 20 years ago. Your dad is a great man and he appreciates music. I salute him!

@Les D - If your Dad's issues with his fingers is due to joint pain/inflammation, perhaps have him look into a product called "Penetrex" that has helped a couple of people I know with various joint and muscle aches and pains. It's available on Amazon.com, Walmart, CVS, and elsewhere. Best wishes to you both.

@@karltaylor4455 Thank you. Indeed it is beautiful to listen to them. Without show effects, without flashlights, without cosmetic bags, without gesticulating - simply nice, talented people and their music. I wish I could see them some day on a stage. There are several Dixieland Festivals in Europe, but they look very commercialized. Nothing compares to Tuba Skinny. They play on a road corner with ordinary people dancing around - and they play in a concert hall. A genuine piece of American culture. Great ! All the best to you also...

As a female vocalist myself I've covered just about every style of music, including Blues and Swing Jazz. I can honestly say, without a doubt, that Erika & the Tuba Skinny musicians are the absolute BEST representation of an era of music that's never "covered" correctly nor authentically. I'm so happy they don't augment their sound via modern technology, other than an occasional PA system, bcuz they're ALL truly special and her vocals are flawless!

This is the music I'd listen to at my (English) father's knee back on the 50s, on his shellac 78s - Mugsy Spanier keep coming to mind when I listen to Shaye on cornet, but the way Erika sings reminds me so much of the style of Billie, lagging behind the beat, and with real feeling in her voice. Finding Tuba Skinny's like I've been reborn musically!
@J.M.Stigner
@J.M.Stigner 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Denise, how would you describe this Blues in detail, ie. is it rag time, 8 bar? It sounds like a similar structure to Dylan's 'Don't think Twice Its Alright' - I'm not equipped with the knowledge to understand how you'd categorise this song structure and wondered if you could help? cheers
@howiesmith1504
@howiesmith1504 3 жыл бұрын
@@J.M.Stigner It's a bluesy tune in the form of a typical 32 bar pop song with an A-A-B-A structure (two choruses, a bridge strain and another chorus...8 bars each), one of the commonest Tin Pan Alley frameworks. And you're right, it does have some similarity to "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright," but Mississippi bluesman Bo Carter's 1935 original record predated Dylan's early '60s tune by almost three decades. .

@@alfching2499 Barber was pretty average. But Ottilie P was an amazing voice. Her version of "Poor Man's Blues" breaks my heart still. The last chorus of her "Jailhouse Blues" still makes the hairs on the back of my neck rise with fear. My son hired a band like this, musically, I mean, for his wedding. It was called the 1906 band and the wedding was held at Heritage Square in Los Angeles, a place where old homes and buildings from the 1870s to the 1910s are sent to keep from being demolished. They are arranged around a “main street”. It was the perfect venue for the wedding and the band. Now I follow this type of music.

I have a friend whose collection of this era of music is quite extensive, or was, as he sold/donated much of it to the National Archives. What he does still retain he often features when he substitute DJ's on the local public radio station here in Pittsburgh. I say all that to say, I appreciate this bands authenticity to the style of that era and how it reproduces the feel and authentic sound. Those old recordings, although valuable for historical reasons, lack the clarity and true beauty of the genre because the technology was primitive (not a condemnation, just the facts) and the medium, through age, has obviously deteriorated. Some would say, that is part of its charm. But this band in particular, makes it like going back in time and experiencing this musical era live and in person. I was touched by these folk's hearts that's obvious in their performance and found myself binge watching all them. That era was definitely "...the best and worst of times'''". Peace!

Swing is the OG folk fusion. my grandad had about 200 78' rpm vinyl records... I'm a Scotsman but am a soulman cause my pops had awesome taste in music. Cheers Tuba Skinny... swing is the basis of all my music, and you lot are younger than me... Live the tradition my friends.

Yes - the placement of Erika's vocal range make her not a true soprano, but more mezzo. And because of that, what happens for listeners: the magical combination of the tune..with the person singing it. I love Erika's 'pipes' - she is, as one commenter says, "like listening to an old vinyl", in terms of how RIGHT her singing is, how seamlessly it delivers the material. So very cool!!!

Cynthia Hawkins I think that Erica comes from the Billie Holiday/ Bessie Smith school of singing. It's a completely different sound to modern female singers, the laid back, cool, almost shy delivery, not in your face like these days. It's quite mesmerising, brilliant.

To me her voice has the same quality and sound as that of Billie Holiday. I’m no music expert I just know what I like. That’s just what it sounds like to me. She really is perfect for this kind of music. This means a great deal to me because my late husband discovered Tuba Skinny just a short few years before he died in 2021 so listening to them and watching them brings back memories of him -makes me miss him even more because I wish we could dance to their music, particularly when they do one of my favorites “Little Coquette”. I think there’s is the best rendition.

In November of 2005, I was in the French quarter when I heard a beautiful voice wafting down the street. I told my friends we had to check it out. We walked into a bar where a band was playing. I don't know if this is the same voice or not, but she sounds like her. I could listen to her for hours!
