Shaye and the band really shaking the place up....Max and the rhythm section keep this tune chugging along. Great solos by all. Always love the way Shaye rips into her first solo so strong and confident.........................

Max’s banjo does so much, along with Robin’s washboard, to bring us back to the music that became New Orleans Jazz.

Many thanks, The Gumbo Gumbas. 'Hot Town' - depicting a train journey to 'Hot Town' and reaching the destination at the end of the piece - was composed in 1929 by clarinet-playing bandleader Fess Williams and recorded in New York that year by Fess Williams and His Royal Flush Orchestra. Tuba Skinny copy the Introduction of the original and then sensibly omit the vocal patter while making the 'railway' noises before Shaye (from 00:22 to 00:55) is the first to play the 32-bar theme. Fess Williams' original version is full of ideas but I think Tuba Skinny's quicker tempo and plentiful clever tricks make their version even more enjoyable than his. Note the clever ending, with slight rallentando and extra two bars, to bring the train journey to an end. Played entirely in the key of B flat.

Great GOoDness.....TS are just superb........to capture LIVE such vitality and exuberance takes a blend of VERY special skills........NOTHING like as easy as it seems believe me for I did/tried it for many (35+) years around UK. TSs + Marla's Shotguns really should be TREASURED.........'Nawlins' STILL rules.

Hear hear!! ['we've' long held in the UK that NOJ never dies 'right out'.........its musicality, inventive honesty and sheer joyousness are sometimes temporarily drowned out by antithetic 'pop' tripe but it never fails to be revivified.....like a 'drought hit' precious, exotic 'desert flower' after 'the rains'!!!]
