Le Festival de Swing à Danser, "Jazz aux Sources a 20 ans", Châtel-Guyon, May 18 - 21, 2018, was blessed in many ways. The weather couldn't have been better, blue skies, sun, still not too hot. People gathered in great numbers to enjoy performances of all kinds, as well as dancing in the streets and floors or attending dinners to live music. One band, Tuba Skinny from New Orleans, touring Europe, graced this charming little, old spa town of Châtel-Guyon, some 110 miles west of Lyon, France, with a 3-day stop-over. There must be ways for everyone who loves this music to repay Tuba Skinny for all the joy they shower us with. Either get their CDs and vinyls, or even better, add a pilgrimage to the cradle of Jazz, New Orleans, not necessarily during French Quater Festival. Believe this is quite an accurate account of Tuba Skinny's 2nd day's performance at Parc Thermal, in the eyes, ears and mind of one in the audience, in one-go and unedited. Many Thanks to TS for letting us stay up-front and extremely close, while documenting this once in a lifetime event. Videographed with a hand-held SONY HandyCam FDR-AX100, in FH quality mode. Craig Flory, clarinet; Shaye Cohn, cornet; Barnabus Jones, trombone; Erika Lewis, drum, vocals; Jason Lawrence, banjo, guitar; Gregory Sherman, guitar, banjo, vocals; TODD, sousaphone; Robin Rapuzzi, washboard.

They are musicians in the best sense of the word, each one of them is an expert on one ore more instruments, on the other hand they are "free" enough to improvise, the sound is perfect and extremely near to the original bands of that time in New Orleans. All of them are extremely natural, there is no "posing", no star-allures whatsoever, no Diva, no Divo, just pure personalities. Listening to them is a pleasure, looking at them also! As to the two strong women: One has to love them, there's no choice! An old man from Switzerland.

@lizlee6290

@@robertr6675 The singers and composers whose material they favor include Victoria Spivey, Jelly Roll Morton, Lucille Bogan, Memphis Minnie, Jabbo Smith, Georgia White, Skip James, Merline Johnson, Ma Rainey, Hattie Hart, Blind Blake and Clara Smith. All of those mentioned are "black" as you say, or African-American. To me that means Tuba Skinny is heavily influenced by so-called black music, particularly that out of New Orleans. Read up on the history of New Orleans jazz - it's fascinating.

What is about Tuba Skinny that has me so hooked... I ask myself quite often. Is it 'Shaye'.... is it 'Erika' Is it Robin's slick moves. Is it Todd's ability to rattle my car as he's blows 200 watts of power through it? Barnabus maybe with his awesome talent.. what is it that just gets me... I JUST LOVE TUBA SKINNY!!!!!!!

This video with the tight frames that I love. I mean you can literary see the music in their eyes, how they enjoy making the music with each other. Each musician is gold and collectively they're priceless. I appreciate the fact that this group has their music recorded for everyone to enjoy.
@Qladstone
@Qladstone 4 жыл бұрын
It is music in its most natural form. Each of these musicians is constantly improvising, creating music on the spot, collectively feeding ideas to and off each other. The instruments are all not amplified at all to let the natural acoustic properties be projected unaltered, and for these they are truer musicians for they need to each control their volume and fit their sound within the group by listening and adjusting. To top it off, the audience is not expected to sit still and silent in a concert hall filled with coughing sounds during silent moments; they are free to move about, talk, laugh, and dance!

@@donsurlylyte , Thank you Don, we are very happy to hear your praise. Actually, getting the opportunity to stay up front, leaning on the stand while trying to follow the flow of music from these humble musicians, is a true blessing. You feel their greatness in your bones! Believe Shaye and co. love playing in France. Never ever has Shaye spoken with so many words in true love of their venue. 10 years earlier, TS rode into the Plaza in Andernos-les-Bains on bicycles to perform. Shaye's smiles and eyes expose her sincerety. She and her band were happy and so were we. Returning to A-l-B in July 2019 and their last day's show there tells a lot. Of course, in these instances, we try our outmost to document their performances as there will be no second take.

appreciating that yr just looking to state extreme appreciation but somehow the whole "best ever" thing makes me queasy every time I hear it 'cuz there is so much of it out there & it gets me feeling especially queasy when it is pointed at a band like this that is SO great becuz the love of the spirit of what their music delivers is such a strong, clear, central part of what they deliver & where they found it in all the hours it takes to get this good & play so interactively that "greatest ever" rap even kinda tastes (to me) as if it demeans what they do for being so far from the point so no complaint w/ yr appreciative comment, I dish plenty of cliches myself trying to praise things too good for words, just sayin' what's on my mind here w/ no real criticism nor relevance to yr comment, cuz I read so much GOAT stuff when I read youtube comments. maybe all I'm sayin' is I'm gettin' to be a pissy old crone but I am all in w/ yr appreciation

In my opinion, this group is great and I often listen to them when I want to listen to good traditional jazz.

Good grief, this is such a FABULOUS band! I can't get enough of them. And FYI, I bought there entire collection of CDs. So should you! Oh, and two more points: 1) don't forget to give a thumbs up above, and 2) great video and audio work, Candcj. Better than studio quality! Kudos to Sony, I guess.

Hi Demef! Thanks for your extended comment. Very much appreciate your decision to buy Tuba Skinny's full CD collection. They need our full support during these daring times. Somebody wrote that listening to this band is his daily medicine, keeping him in good spirits. As for our SONY Handycams, we are very happy with them.
