Wow - never thought I'd hear a current band play a King Oliver song, but then again it's Tuba Skinny! Wonderfully arranged

Love how they each have their own kooky look, angry Shea, buzzed out clarinet, toothy grimace steel string, blues brothers guitar, dancing girl bass drum, porkpie/hobo trombone, big brother's too large hat saxophone, and you know it's all props. They pull off the backyard neighborhood band look so well, that you can almost ignore their incredible skill and polished synchrony and obvious practice that went into making the performance. Great job and great showmanship!

This is as big as TS gets, I think, although they might play with another band now and then. The group usually has seven, eight or nine members. Ewan Bleach, from the UK, played clarinet with TS during a long visit to the US. Here he is on sax. As always, the sound is peppy and moving.

Ths group knows how to truly Express a part of our musical history that I wish there was a lot more of, especially considering what it has devolved into today.

Fantastic to know there is a group dedicated to the survival of real down-home Nawlins music. We have needed this for quite some time. I love this group, especially the little trumpet player ! She is destined to be great as they all are. I will look for the band's appearances on a website.
@markhorton39945 жыл бұрын
William Fulgham. Shaye Cohn is not a "little trumpet player ". First it's a cornet. Among her accomplishments she leads Tuba Skinny. She plays trombone, piano and fiddle well above the very high standards of New Orleans traditional Jazz. Reportedly she also plays accordion and spoons. You are way too late saying that Shaye and Tuba Skinny " will" be great. They have been for a few years now. If you like women blowing horns, there are at least two more Jazz bands led by women who play trumpet or cornet. Marla Dixon and the all female Shakemup Jazz Band. The Shakemup Jazz Band also features world class clarinet and trombone players and an excellent guitar player .Marla Dixon previously led the Shotgun Jazz Band and still occasionally plays with Broken Marbles along with other members of Shakemup and Tuba Skinny.

@@markhorton3994 you misinterpreted my reference to Shaye Conn. I certainly did not say that in a derogatory manner by any means. I'm well aware of her background and who she is and I have been a proponent of the group ever since I discovered them and I am working on getting them up here in Jackson Mississippi to perform sometime this next spring, if possible, at one of the festival's. I only used the word 'little' because she is small in stature and she is very attractive as far as I'm concerned. I'm sorry that you took it that way because I certainly did not mean anything negative in referring to her. I know what she has done since Katrina and I am well aware of her classical music training and her grandfather and father who are, or were, very prominent in the Jazz World. I think we can all be thankful that she has found a niche in New Orleans and is revising an old form of jazz that has not been prominent in several decades, and I salute her for her dedication to locating and working with quality musicians that are now part of Tuba Skinny.
@markhorton39945 жыл бұрын
@@williamfulgham2010 I apologize. You know more about her than I do. To know her is to love her. I hope your venture succeeds with great profit to all. Hearing Tuba Skinny is profit to everyone who hears them. Money isn't everything but eating is necessary so making money is good.
@williamfulgham20105 жыл бұрын
@@markhorton3994 no problem. I see where I did use the word trumpet rather than cornet because I know the story about her and her friends getting out after Katrina and discovering her classic cornet found in the aftermath, and wondering who might have played it in the past. Our group is not attempting to profit by their appearance, but we are trying to get them into a venue that's held in Fondren Place at Duling Hall in Jackson. The main thing, as far as the money goes, is to get some funding for them, and enjoy their live performance.
@july8xx5 жыл бұрын
@@williamfulgham2010 Shaye’s coronet was give to her by Ed Polcer a renowned NOLA trumpet player and father of Ben Polcer, Ben and Shaye played together in the Loose Marbles another band you should look up. Ben also plays Piano and Coronet with the Shotgun Jazz Band, and Shaye also helped start the Shake em Up Jazz Band and played Trombone with them. These are four of the best NOLA bands around. If you like this music you will like all these bands. A good place to start is with Pops Coffee’s books a frequent commentor on these videos. I do hope your venture does well and I appreciate your work spreading this music.
