I’m personally not offended that it doesn’t have overdrives, or that the FX chain is locked, or that it doesn’t have plugins. I wanted something more controllable and more comprehensive for captures, and this delivers. My in on the way from Sweetwater, should have it by Tuesday.

I use a capture of a revv Generator 120 in GE labs and the tone is almost the same, even I use captures of orange, mesa, bigger, Marshall, evh and pedals like Ts, cabinets etc. the sound is the same and paste but no Least all is free

Definitely ordering soon, as with the QC when it came out there were minor issues but they updated and fixed them. I can see them improving more and more with time. I have no need for a QC. but this I can see using regularly.

Haven’t tried it yet but from all the reviews I’ve seen so far it sounds incredible! I don’t think this is meant to be a stand alone unit and I see a lot of people complaining about that. This seems more like competition for the other units that are giving you the preamp tones. I could care less if there is a built in OD or not but that’s just my preference. Great video!

@@florenttenryu5011 I’ve heard the comparisons on here and I preferred the Neural plus I mainly bought it to capture my home rig to take with me on work trips and from what I’ve seen the capture process is way less complicated on the Nano so for that reason alone it’s better for me. I understand that people basically wanted a plugin player (I was hoping for that too, but it’s easy enough to just capture my favorite presets from the plugins I use the most which will be nice) but I like this package just as much if not more. But that’s just me

​​@@6sqd my nano cortex finally arrived. I bought this pretty much for capturing different sounds from my 2 amps. I have an Orange OR15 and EVH el34 50 watt. So today I tried capturing a pushed clean sound and a heavy sound from my OR15. 1st time didn't go well. User error. Figured out it was a routing problem in my captor x. Tried again just a little while ago, using my headphones as monitors, because I have kids. I am blown away by how close it sounds to my amp. I'm going to try my captures through a cabinet on Wednesday. It they sound bad, I can always do it again with my cab as a monitor. I think of this as a preamp pedal, that can capture and play downloaded captures, and has a few more bells and whistles. If you want a fancy preamp pedal that you will use with your pedals, this is for you. If you want amp models and tons of effects etc, this is not for you. Hope this helps. Almost rushed and grabbed one but I read the manual. No OD, one modulation effect (chorus only), can't move fx around. So basically this can never be a stand alone rig for me. If the captures were considerably more accurate than the tonex then maybe it could replace the tonex but the bigger unit has been comparable to tonex. My preference - A few UA audio amp pedals in between an h-90, a full analog rig, or a fractal are the way to go.

Thanks for being honest in your review. There are some weird decisions Neural DSP made. But still interesting, bc you can include an overdrive in the capture. But it would be much more beneficial if we could decide which effects we want to assign and may have the ability to decide where to put them in the signal chain. Not sure if that would work for me. Honestly it could cover most of my live tones but I don’t like the fact that it is kind of inflexible if you can’t make your own captions in terms of effects

Depends on the guitarist and what their preferred gear is. I have a Boss SD-1 that will always stay on my pedal board. I have no need for virtual OD. What I do need is virtual amp sims.

@@MysticArchmage Yep, this unit is probably at its best on a pedalboard. For me, if I get it, it will replace a UA Ruby which is a $400ish Vox amp sim pedal. Compared to that this is so insanely more versatile.

I use Fractal for modeling and was interested in giving Neural a try. I have used the ToneX and Kemper but did not "vibe" with them. This is an easy go, and with no commas in the price did not have to get my wife's permission. No OD in front is not a deal breaker for me. I boost with a real OD. ALWAYS. will have to see/ hear how this works out with an OD baked in, but prefer to use an analog TS9 or SD-1 in front of just about everything. Kyle, great work. I love the sound, I totally agree with you with the overdrive, I would have loved to see how did you connect the Nano Cortex with the Amp heads for the captures. I suppose that maybe connecting the send of the effects loop to the device?? My great dilemma is spending the whole amount and going for the big brother or going for this Nano thing. What happened to the Mooer PreAmp live!! Every single KZbinr said it was more than awesome and then forgot about it. I still own one and I think it's still a great sounding device.

Sounds great. But to me, modelers go directly to PA system. I've never been a fan of modeler in power amp to cabinet. I would use modeler live with a good monitoring on stage but for "in the room" tone, practicing with my band, tube amp is still the best.

I think for the price, the fact you can’t control the order, and its limited effects, and the simple fact you still can’t use your amp sims, something they’ve promised long ago now, it should have more to it. The price isn’t too affordable in my eyes when you can just save $50 and get an HX stomp, or save $250 and get a ToneX. There are so many more affordable ways to capture your amps tones and use them live, a $550 piece of tech with limited versatility misses for me.

tbh something like this doesn't need an FX loop. Hell, you can put it IN the FX loop of a multi-FX unit, or treat it like a preamp pedal with built-in reverb and delay. TBH I think with units like this, including the NAM Player, and the ToneX/ToneX One, this is their best use case.

My assessment down below, but for the algorithm (can you read this, KZbin?!): GREAT video, one of the best of yours in a longer run, you allowed for a great peak in how the unit works! PUSH THIS MANS' VIDEOS RIGHT UP MY THROAT; WILL YA! Feedback on the video, since you tried some new cameras and lighting recently: Edits sometimes cut a bit too fast for my old eyes (but still well-placed at breaking points), and lighting at times was a bit dark, but the contrasts you got and the way the lighting worked was REALLY up-ing the bar of your videos, nice! The picture quality, especially during the intro/talking head is really amazing. Now my thoughts: These captures while you were playing them sounded really good! It's a nice and handy tool. I like that it has an interface functionality, I like that you the app is very versatile and can get you far. I love the fact that you create the captures on the device itself and it trains them on the spot. I like the transpose feature, it's neat. I like that it contains a chorus, a delay and a reverb. I do not like the fact that there is no boost block, even a capture block with lesser fidelity would be enough for boosts and overdrives. Most of them do not require the same amount of neural training as an amplifier. I do not like that according to all other videos we watched a year ago, that ToneX seemed to be a better capturing solution, and this is now 1,5 times the cost. I do not like the missing XLR output - easy to fix with a TRS to XLR adapter, but it's yet another thing you'd have to be aware to take with you, and depending on if the TRS is phantom-power-safe or not, take that into consideration as well. I have no idea if you can run dual outputs, one with an IR, one without. If not, that would be a major downside. It's not a bad product, or "disappointing" as some put it, but me having already a ToneX and a NAM Player, I'd have to pass on this. Would only make sense to create Amp captures to then sell them via a website or so, so currently there's no need for this for me.

I think the sound of this is great but to be honest I think it was released a year or so too late because of the Tonex. This is essentially the same as the original pedal but has a delay and pitch shifter instead of the compressor on the Tonex. Obviously you can capture on this but the idea of ToneX is to use it in conjunction with the computer app. I don’t think there’s enough of this of a difference to justify getting this too, I’ll just use my own delay and modulation with it and that’s it

Cool and all, but very limited in its use cases. Like others have said, this really only makes sense for people with an amp collection they want to capture and put on a pedalboard. But even then there's the little ToneX pedal for that. And this doesn't make sense as a studio only item, especially when theres the Neural Amp Modeler for free. The lack of built in amps seems the biggest issue for me. No way this could replace my HX Stomp. Would love a dedicated video on the Quilter!

I think the biggest miss, is that majority of guitar players were hoping to get into the modeling hardware world of Neural and were expecting a literal smaller version of the QC, and that is not what it is. I mostly play with neural dsp, stl tones, mercuriall, and plugin Alliance amp sim mostly even though I have many others. it's a basic unit, and nothing stops you from using a drive pedal in front, and it supports capturing with a drive pedal. Most devices like this are underfeatured and overpriced, if we're being honest. They're really made for pro level touring musicians who have a specific sound that relies on specific gear, usually multiple amps or expensive/rare amps that are a pain to replace if something happens, and it's easier to use tone captures. The other target customer base is people with too much money and not enough sense to realize they don't need it. Mostly guitarists in local bands with inflated egos and expendable income to burn on gear. Most people would be better served with a couple of pedals and something like a Revv or Lichtlaerm or TC Electronic or UA preamp pedal, or else some sort of AIO multi-FX modeler, and/or a solid state amp of some kind.

No power supply needed because your pedalboard should power it 9-12v range. It’s a pedal No screen needed you carry one around all day - makes the product more durable. FX loop doesn’t matter live audience will never know the difference. Sounds way better than Line6 and ToneX tinnitus crap.

No need for full touch screen UI, but what’s the point of having multiple banks and presets, if you cannot navigate through it in a live environment without your phone? Then you may say buy an external foot switch. But with external foot switch, external OD, external additional effects, which btw you can not add in the middle of nanocortex signal chain as there is no fx loop, this pedal is no longer “the power of a full guitar or bass rig”, as claimed by NDSP.

Nano cortex + Drive pedal + Compressor pedal + Pedalboard + Power Supply = 550 + 200 + 200 + 120 + 100 = 1170 $ or €. Quad Cortex offers more by +/- same price. Conclussion: The NAno Cortex is good for people that have another modeler and can incorporate this thing in a FX Loop, or if you have your favorite pedals

Can't be done internally! No separate outputs, you have to somehow split with a buffered splitter in to a separete cab loader or a DI box at the end and use the thru to connect to onstage cabs. Cabsim bypassed on the nano.

The NC is about a third of the price of a QC. Don’t need a screen. Can’t beat tactile rotary knobs. Very quick and intuitive. You can capture effects and plugins. NC also gives you access to thousands of captures from the Cortex Cloud. Jack Gardiner, Rabea Massaad, Yes Please!

@@belligerentamateur You know this thing has received a lot of criticism, none of which you address. Does it sound good? Sure. That's not really a high benchmark to cross. For it to be what it is at this price, it's a no brainier that this thing isn't worth it. There is an overwhelming amount of negative criticism on the product. Look at the HX Stomp, look at the tonex.

It really seems like they rushed this to market to beat the upcoming Fractal and Line 6 releases. It doesn’t even have amp models which are actually excellent on the Quad.

No stereo amps? No stereo IRs? No FX Loop? Man, In my mind they should have just created a devoted SHARC assembly for a single plugin (Archtype Plini Pedal). And called it a day. I wonder if somehow the capture in could be used as an fx loop for that overdrive "out-front" setup?
