The Browns did have a franchise QB, and they completely ruined his confidence, rushed him back from injury, gave him four head coaches in four seasons, and then dumped him for Deshaun Watson. Baker Mayfield was the best QB that the Browns have had since Bernie Kosar, and they know it. Look at what he did in Tampa Bay last year, he went to a franchise that just saw Tom Brady retire, and he took that team to the playoffs and was within one drive of getting to the NFC Championship Game. If they kept Baker and then drafted Chris Olave and Will Anderson the next year, and found depth on offense and defense without giving up major draft capital they would be legitimate Super Bowl Contenders. Haslam better thank the gods for Andrew Berry or else he'd be getting mocked at even more than he is.

Baker only plays well every other year in case you haven't noticed the pattern

Baker never plays well under expectations. People thought the Bucs were gonna be in the Caleb Williams race, so on cue, he had a decent season.

@@jojijoestar7233 yes, 1 game, on a bad team, vs a bad team. Notice how people always point to that rams game, but never mention any of the 5 games he played after that. Also, nobody mentions how he was so bad with the panthers, that they released him mid-season. PJ Walker and Sam Darnold arguably played better. He’s fun to watch and to root for, absolutely. But he was not worth extending. Hes never gonna win a SB unless he’s the backup on a team that does. He’s too inconsistent. Since the Bucs are expecting to go farther this season, what they should expect is 8-9 or another 9-8 season with disappointing results.

It's simply a matter of thinking a QB can fix a team. First, you have to build a team, then go get your QB. It took a long time for the Browns to learn that and they ended the careers of some promising QB's before they got started. Sadly, they seem to have reverted to their old habits with Manziel and the mismanagement of Mayfield and are now stuck with Watson.

When this many QBs fail, you KNOW it isn't the QB... It's the ineptitude around him making it nearly impossible to succeed. Baker is in the process of making that abundantly clear.

It's crazy just how bad the Browns have been as an institution at picking QBs. It genuinely is hard to get a top QB, but it feels like they have actively tried to avoid doing so. When you look at Chicago, another cursed franchise, at least they look like they are TRYING at QB. A big trade to get Cutler, trading up to draft Tribiski, trading up to get Fields. And none of these were huge successes but these are guys who at least start for a few years. When the Browns are in the same situation, they take Manziel and Hoyer, outrageous choices that were clearly doomed to fail. Even going after Watson; where they give up too much and overpay him; it's just... No, Browns. No. That's not a good idea. I genuinely think the only sensible move they have made in decades is when they drafted Colt McCoy in the third round, and he was unexciting but somewhat competent. McCoy is stayed in the league until last year, by the way. He played meaningful snaps in Arizona. How many other Browns QBs were even still backups?

In the 1960's and maybe into the 70's, they had a QB named 'Ryan' ... I can't think of his first name now ... but he lasted a handful of years ... Jim Brown was the FB in those days.
