There are practice bomb targets all over southern Arizona that were used to train bomber crews in WWII. They only dropped practice bombs on them though. No craters are seen around any of them, including the one on the playa. Practice with live bombs was, and still is, all done at what is now called the Barry Goldwater Air Force Range. @pierre I totally understand that! Where I'm from, (New Jersey) we have some of the most strict gun laws. If you have not tried to soar the face of Sandia Peak, elevation > 10300', it is beautiful in the right conditions. The eastern slope is much more gradual but highly forested. The western slope is steep. arid and photogenic. Watch the wind , rotor may be bad. You will have to watch out for the Sandia Peak aerial tramway that goes West to East from 6529' to 10422'. it ends at High Finance Restaurant atop Sandia Peak. Decent but pricey dining there. If you want to launch from the east side of the peak there is a decent place to launch about 100 yards east of the parking area at the Sandia Peak Ski area, elevation 8590'. There be deer or black bears about there sometimes.
