To me it sounded like the 4 blade wasn't letting the engine get far into the power-band. I have a buddy with a thrust tester found that the 125cm 2 blade got 10lb less thrust than a 125cm 4 blade and the 4 blade was getting more thrust than his 3 blade props. I was thinking maybe you could try the 125cm 4 blade as It may actually give you better response and more thrust than the 130cm 4 blade if it lets the engine farther into the power-band.

The 3-blade seemed noticeably smoother in flight. The two-blade seems and looks more torque-y, and that was also your opinion as well. I thought the 4-blade was going to be a 90° offset, but with that longer degree offset seems more like a weird 2-blade.

Your timing of this test is great because I will soon be upgrading my paramotor and have been giving preference to the 3 blade prop option. I wasn't surprised by the results. Based on your reviews, I would agree that the three blade would be the best. Best rate of climb, Best at a smooth vibration free ride, Best low level of sound at cruise, which in your case, as you also pointed out, is perfect for recording flights and sharing them. Audio quality is critical for a good video, and I do believe the three blade would enhance your flying and your recording. Cheers from Winnipeg.

I'd be really interested to see you try the 4 blade again, but with a more powerful engine. I suspect that will solve everything, except torque. - Not just because it's a more powerful engine, but because it is optimal for that set up. I suspect that if you did the same thing with the 3 and 2 blade props, you wouldn't get as much improvement as you would on the 4 blade prop. Also, When you mentioned the noise, I was like "Ahhhhhhh that's why the 4 blade has the weird angles." It will be so that the beat of blade 2 and 4 are hard to distinguish from 1 and 3, so it will give it a sound more like the 2 blade prop. It could also be the cause of the noise you observed, but I haven't thought enough about that yet.
@brentchilders8213
@brentchilders8213 4 жыл бұрын
Actually, I am suspecting that the "weird angles" also have to do with the 6 place bolt pattern for attaching the blades to the motors. Hard to do 90 degrees unless you have a 4 or 8 bolt pattern. Weaker, more awkward attachment.

I found this review quite enlightening. I was very intrigued by it. It got my brain cells all excited. What little I have left. From your review. It was the 3 blade that spoke to me. And as far as the sound went. Here are my observations. From this multi-major music award nominated, audio engineer. The 2 blade, sounds like, a sports car. The 4 blade, sounds like, a Mustang V-8. The 3 blade. Sounds like a, Mercedes-Benz. And sounds like a great difference split to me. And quieter for the captain. Properly annoying to those on the ground. Sounds like a winner. And they'll know. Oh. It's him again. Pull the window shades down. With your distinctive annoying sound.

GREAT video! Well as for the final results of your opinion, if you take into consideration a point scale best being 3 points, second, being 2 points, and third being 1 point, the 3- blade prop got 12 point and the 2 bladed and 4 bladed props both got 9 points, so 3 bladed prop seems like the way to go.

If you want less noise from the propeller you can add blades so the propeller runs slower but you need to increase pulley ratio so the engine runs at the optimal RPM but you are adding more weight and more drag.
@odem2002
@odem2002 4 жыл бұрын
In the RC plane world you are suppose to go to a smaller diameter prop for each additional blade you use and go up on the pitch 1. So a 15" blade with a 7 pitch you would typically use a 14x8 3-blade. You are using the same size motor to push the extra mass of an extra blade which also has more load on the motor while producing more thrust. That resulting in less of a throttle response. I would check into a smaller 3 blade to try out. If you ran a 130cm 2-blade try using a 125cm 3-blade

From flying quadcopters, I've always thought about it as more blades = more thrust, but at the cost of efficiency. I'd caution you to pay attention to fuel consumption a bit and make sure it isn't significantly impacted. It does also make sense that you'd lose a bit of throttle response too, more blades = more weight, so there will be a bit more lag time as the engine tries to get that extra weight up to speed. As for the 4-blade, I'd expect it to also have more thrust total. Since it didn't seem that way to you, I'd be wondering if the engine is having trouble turning the blade fast enough... sounds like 2 or 3 blade might be where you want to be.

@dalgrim
@dalgrim 4 жыл бұрын
From a physics standpoint: more blades will have more total thrust with less response while being less efficient overall. the fewer blades the more efficient. If you check your fuel burn you’ll notice that the multi-blade props burn slightly more fuel. The prop acceleration is all about rotational inertia and rotational mass of the prop. Any heavier pilots should strongly consider the higher blade count props for the better thrust.

Great prop shootout! I've always wondered about the differences between the 3 styles. Now I'm wondering, what would the 4-blade prop sound like and perform like if the blades were equal distances 90° apart! HMMM ... The 4-blade prop sounds a bit like both the 2-blade and 3-blade prop sounds mixed together, like if they were running side-by-side. I think the blades of the 4-blade one are too close together, so the trailing blade is hitting turbulent air, hence that weird tip noise it was making. I'm no engineer - just random thoughts I have. Seems like the 3-blade would be the best choice for a cross country mission, since the torque output was higher. What is it with cats and boxes? It's like some magnetic force inside a cardboard box that draws felines inside.😁 All mine do the same thing, except for our almost 17-year-old "old man" kitty. He just eats and sleeps these days - not much else, lol. You could put a mouse right in front of him, and he might lift a paw ... once. The other 2 youngsters would destroy the thing, LOL - anything that moves, they annihilate! Flies, grasshoppers, mice, fingers under the blanket ... 😂🤣😂

More torque is not good on a paramotor, it means the propeller spining one way induce a torque force on the motor and pilot, causing one side of the glider to be more loaded than the other. It make the paramotor turn when you want to go straight at high rpm.so you have to brake one side to go straight. It make it easier to turn one way than the other.

From the perspective of hearing you clearly, the three blade was far and away the best. Aside from being a little higher pitched, it doesn't have the rough harmonics that the two and four blade did. Some of that may be having not only an odd, but prime number of blades. It obviously had a bit more power delay from the added weight, but I think the additional load was actually in the sweet spot for that motor. The four blade didn't sound good and obviously wasn't performing all that well for the most part. I got the feeling it was loading down the engine a bit too much. I'm thinking for most of your videos, that three blade would actually be a nice improvement for the audio. If you want to do high speed aerobatics, the two blade would be the one to go with.

I think the 3 and 4 blade props would show more advantage with a more powerful motor. Comparing them all on a 185 shows the limits of a 185 with that prop. A Thor 250 with a 4 blade might show it to be the best choice.

3 blade is the best I've put a lot more slicer on my motor and have cut a 45 on the backside of the prop to help with the noise

engineering/ fluid dynamics- wise, 3 blade props are the most efficient. The four blade prop tip noise was quite 'weed-eatery', like the 2 blade. I think I'd split the diff, and go with the 3 blade carbon fiber prop.

It would be interesting to compare this 4 blades setup with a more conventional "cross shaped" 4 blades. This kind of X shape acts more like a 2 blades than a 4 blades in the end, with the disadvantage of additional mass
