Thank you so much for such a detailed tutorial. It’s a simple tote but your attention to detail make all the difference in the world in how the bag lays, hangs, sits straight, and all that. Simply elegant and beautiful!

I love this tutorial! I've used nylon webbing for other bags - and I take a lighter to the raw edges to melt them, and that helps seal it so it doesn't fray. Obviously that doesn't work for the cotton webbing, though!

I enjoyed making this tote, perfectly written/tutorial for us newbies, I would like to learn how to add a recessed zipper to the top, have watched many tutorials and ended up totally confused 😂 I think you would make the process a lot easier to understand.

Awesome tutorial, but maybe it's my ADD. It was confusing for me when they are done at the same time. If you could do one first and then the other that would be great. Because I can then go back and forth ... but thank you!

This is such a great tutorial! Thank you for this! I bought this pattern and am wondering if you have a pattern to show the way to add either an enclosed recessed zipper or a zipper across the top? Or both? I’d be more than happy to pay for the pattern if you did. I’m new at bagmaking and this pattern is so well done (and you are such a thorough instructor) that I’m sure a zipper tutorial by you would be too.

Thank you! I'm always happy to share the why with the how! It's very important to me as a technical sewist. I use Tex 45-70 on my industrial, and typically Mara 70 in my domestic.

@@knottedthreadsco Thank you!! I’ve been using a Tex 70 on my industrial but sometimes it almost seems like too much so I think I’m going to try Tex 45 to see if I like that better.

Can’t wait to try this. I have a question about the bottom? How do you stop the tote from caving in on the bottom when carrying things? This is the problem I always have with bags.
@lucylovesvintage.4105
@lucylovesvintage.4105 2 жыл бұрын
I used cork on my bottom/ sides I did away with the woven interfacing and added D-light, I used cotton woven on top/centre and added D-light. You could always add fleece to your lining if you want structure and squish.
@knottedthreadsco
@knottedthreadsco 2 жыл бұрын
You could always add a false bottom or change the interfacing as stated by Lucy. The pattern is meant to be an easy, simple, and inexpensive make for those who are new to sewing, so I didn't call for some of the more expensive interfacing for that reason, but I can see how you may want more structure. ☺️ I don't mind the structure as I have written it, as I tend to use this style of bag for something simple like a pool tote/trick or treat bag/grocery bag/random tote and I don't need a ton of structure, just durability.

If I use canvas instead of cotton woven, do you think I need the fleece? I’m not an expert, so deciding what to use and what to leave out is always a hard choice.
@knottedthreadsco
@knottedthreadsco 2 жыл бұрын
Fusible fleece just gives it that extra bit of structure. I make them all the time without it and I just use woven + woven interfacing. ☺️

I find it easier to sew than some vinyls, but I also learned how to sew bags with it, so I'm totally biased there. It has a wonderful texture and feel to it and doesn't get stuck to your presser foot, which is always a bonus. Unfortunately, it does have limitations with quality though, which is why I have been using it less and less. Though I still use it occasionally for sure.

For the lining, can I use any other woven fabric? Why is WPC used? Is it because of the structure it will give to the bag? Curious? Thank you
@knottedthreadsco
@knottedthreadsco 8 ай бұрын
Structure and it eases a bit of prep work to make for a faster sew, It also introduces the material to someone who may be new to sewing. It isn't always something people learn about early on in bag-making, so I thought it was a good opportunity to include it. Lastly it's a preferred lining material for many, though my personal preference is always woven cause I have so many pretty ones!

Hello! Thank you! This pattern is meant to be simple and basic for a beginner at a low cost so it's a small investment of time and money. An add-on pack is coming soon which will include all sorts of interior, exterior, and other material choice changes to further enhance this pattern. A beginner can then decide whether or not they'd like those additional more advanced options by then choosing to purchase the add-on pack.
