future tip for these types of situations: if you swim into the ocean far enough that they can't hit you can just sit in one spot for as long as you want, you can eat food and bandage also

I've not been playing DayZ long, but I would never approach people. I had a fractured leg once and crawled around for two hours before a friendly player found me and offered to help. Seeing as how sticks are nearly impossible to find, I told him to just axe me in the head. A very nice fellow all in all.
