Sakaria Lukas embarked on a 30-hour transatlantic journey from Windhoek, Namibia's capital, to Philadelphia for his televised bout on Saturday night against Tugstsogt Nyambayar.
Despite facing numerous connections and layovers, Lukas found the journey worthwhile. As a full-time sergeant in the Namibian Marine Corps and a significant underdog, he presented a formidable challenge to the heavily favored Nyambayar in the "Showtime Championship Boxing" tripleheader at Borgata Event Center.
The 10-round junior lightweight clash ended in a controversial split draw. Referee Eddie Claudio mistakenly ruled a knockdown in the eighth round as a slip, affecting the final decision. Showtime replays clearly revealed Lukas delivering a left hand that sent Nyambayar to the canvas. However, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board commissioner, Larry Hazzard, insisted to Showtime's Jim Gray that the knockdown resulted from a slip, contrary to the evidence.
The split draw was primarily due to the failure to count Lukas' knockdown. If a point had been deducted from Nyambayar, as warranted, Lukas would have secured a split decision victory.
Judge Anthony Lundy scored the fight 96-94 in favor of Lukas, while judge Ron McNair scored it 96-94 for Nyambayar. Judge Robin Taylor declared it a draw at 95-95, but Lukas would have won by one point on her card if Claudio had acknowledged the knockdown.
Nyambayar, a 29-year-old Olympian from Mongolia, entered the bout as a 25-1 favorite over Lukas, who replaced the original opponent, Vic Pasillas, on short notice due to Pasillas contracting COVID-19.
In the 10th round, Nyambayar's right uppercut forced Lukas to hold, and the final three minutes of the intense fight were highly competitive. Lukas had earlier delivered a right hand and a short left jab in the eighth round, resulting in the disputed knockdown.
The back-and-forth battle saw Lukas landing back-to-back right hands in the sixth round, and Nyambayar responding with a straight right and a right uppercut in the fifth. The fight was marked by exchanges on the inside, with both fighters displaying resilience.
The bout showcased Lukas' determination, who had previously suffered a 10-round unanimous decision loss to Isaac Avelar over a year ago. Despite the challenges and controversies, Lukas demonstrated his prowess in the ring, making the drawn result a significant outcome.
