The Beginning of Our Long Sail to Grenada for Hurricane Season. Catching a Blue Marlin on Day 1.

Tula's Endless Summer

Күн бұрын

After a month of boat repairs and upgrades we load up with food and fuel and work our way out of the hurricane belt. The fish are biting and the storms are brewing. Grenada is our destination for hurricane season as that is one of the places far enough out of the statistical hurricane belt that insurance will allow us to go and still cover the boat for a named storm.

Great job with the marlin! Thank you for holding him while he recovered before you released him. We once had a marlin on line when he jumped and got tail wrapped by the leader, and we reeled him in backwards. We held on to him for around 30 minutes or longer while he recovered. We watched the water off the stern and saw him leap in the air as to signal to us he was ready for another day! Yellow fin tuna are the best. We would grill tuna steaks and cook extra filets for tuna salad the next day. Fair winds and following seas.

The Laurie Sue rode out the hurricane in Egmont Lagoon in the mangroves. A new channel I watch is the Adventure Crew and they filmed all the boats holding on for dear life. The Video is in the live feeds. It looks like it was the safest place in Grenada. It might be a good site to look at since they had some real time interviews on US network news.

The safest place in Grenada was Trinidad. Been here 9 years and finally had to flee. I have to say if I were in Egmont I would have stayed. 14+ boats grounded in Prickly Bay and several more unsalvageable still afloat.

This is when being a KZbinr really pays off because you have such great footage that you are generally filming or ready to film. That was a huge Blue Marlen. You guys did well to even get it to your boat. I was really happy when you released him. Such a beautiful creature. Honestly, I don't know how you would have gotten that size fish into your boat with just the two of you. He looked to weigh a lot. What a special memory that will be.

If this is how the bottom paint looks like after 4 weeks, it’s not antifauling it’s just regular paint. A good bottom paint should keep the barnacles away for 10 to 12 weeks.

I would say think of planning to replace with sweeps or like you did with a straight connector, Smoother is always the best way for any flow as the ID is smaller than what the hose is or go larger in hose sizes too.

great video!…chocked full of really useful advice …insurance woes, sea strainer , lock tite…etc… looks like you have better fishing equipment for landing the biggger ones… fyi…i’ve been spooled using penn 50w 2 speed with 800 yards of 100 lb. mono …you need at least this when you get into yellow fins that weigh in at over 150-200 lbs…btw…the bait and leader lines you’re using looks like what you’d use to land marlin…if you use a more active, lighter bait like a rapalla with steel leader, you might land more tuna/wahoo, and loose the marlin…these baits and leader will corrode pretty fast and eventually fall out …catching a marlin on light tackle is fun, but it takes so long to land the fish it usually kills them…id rather just lose a bait… and so much for $$ bottom jobs… she is really looking good with you keeping her in ship shape! i’m very impressed with seawind from first hand experience… best wishes for you staying out of harms way during hurricane season! cheers!

Sometimes the fittings are called constant radius fittings. Check out a race car fabrication supply company. Not cheep but won’t clog like that and give full flow very close to a straight fitting. Love the show. Glad you’re back on the water.

Can you pressure back wash those strainer pipes and elbows ... If you have to go through a 90deg turn its better to have a smooth bend than a sharp elbow. Better still is to have a closed keel cooling loop . By now you've heard and seen what Hurricane Beryls up to and how its tracking with more brewing behind it. 😢

Not enough copper in the bottom paint. See if you can find a wholesaler of surplus bottom paint from the US Navy yard. It’s probably easier to find in Norfolk than South Florida but I was lucky enough to find some up north before I splashed five gallons ran me $150.00 but four years later I still had very little growth below the boot stripe. To the point the diver I used bought the remaining bottom paint for his sailboat.

Stupid insurance companies. Limiting routes can increase the danger, if you're forced to take a route that is more complicated or can't get you out of a bad weather situation fast enough. That insurance cost is more than my entire boat is worth.

What is the deal with US-insurance companies? Are they crazy? That is why so many sailors flag out their vessels to another country. With aircraft - even if US-registered - you can use insurance from other countries, i.e. Europe - even full-time flying in the US. Can you do that with boats as well?

For a guy that never caught a billfish before, you did a great job of reviving that one. You looked like a pro. As for those strainers, see if you maybe have the inlet & outlet sides reversed. The outlet passage on a strainer housing is often smaller & clogs as you described if you mistakenly use it as an inlet.
