I learned about "No Irish need apply" from my grandfather, when I was 8 years old. I found a sign in his attic with that message on it. I brought it downstairs and asked him about it. He told me it's meaning, and that he went to the attic once a year to look at it, to remind himself of why he should never treat others badly, just because they were different from him. My grandfather had taken that sign from a Boston store window when he was young. He started a business, and had employees of every stripe for 60 years. Cheers to my grandfather!

Cheers to your grandfather!! My great grandma taught me about it when she showed me a slide picture she had taken of the sign in the window in my city. I hate that they're now trying to erase that! I wasn't prepared to get choked up over a commercial, but his verse highlights an aspiration to unity as Americans and citizens of the world so eloquently. In a political atmosphere that is so shattered, this message calls on US to blend and come together. Way great, Tullamore Dew.

Thank you Tullamore, after seeing your commercial on The Late Show with Colbert I had to play it for my husband. We were both floored by the words and sentiment. My parents and siblings seemed to have forgotten they were some of those immigrant Irish and Sicilian that were considered rapists and murderers. Thanks for having the guts to say that. we'll remember your name when we go to buy Whisky!
I agree but would point out the Blend our families blended and added to the culture some of todays immigrants don't blend
@traildog_adventures6 жыл бұрын
Gabriel S it was originally spelled without the e. Look at any bottle of Scotch and you will see it spelled whisky still. One of the Irish Distillers started adding an e as a marketing gimmick, I do t remember which one it was. So in reality either way is the right way to spell whisk(e)y.
@WallStwizkid6 жыл бұрын
@Julie C There is very little justification for the Irish to claim victim status. There is evidence to suggest those signs were rare, and typically posted by other newly arrived immigrants who were ethno-warring for the economic pie.
@traildog_adventures6 жыл бұрын
Jonathan CF I agree not to be claiming victim status with a huge caveat. No one who hasn't personally experienced the action they are trying to claim victim status for has any right to it. With that said, you need to be doing a lot more reading of the history of the newly arrived immigrants into the US. The No Irish need apply signs were a lot more prevalent than you are giving credit for and it wasn't by other newly arrived immigrants. They were from the years of the Potato blight, when the Irish were the largest influx of immigrants. After the civil war the bias towards immigrants shifted from the Irish to the Germans, then to the Italians, then the Eastern Europeans. Although thankfully the Irish were the only ones to have had signs made specifically saying not to apply. Although with our current political climate I wouldn't be surprised if some jaggoff were to make a similar sign for Hispanics now.

Most immigrants here have always said the same. The 3rd generation is nostalgic for the Olde Country, just in time to listen to the stories of the first generation. Brits outlawed Gaelic, so when they starved the Irish, we were arrived on America as native English speakers. That sped up our assimilation. Still, "shanty Irish" suffered from ethnic slurs and prejudice, well into the XXth century. (Prohibition was in part a Protestant reaction against Irish & Italian immigrants.)
