2 of Tulsa's forgotten airports are brought back to life with rare films. Commercial Airport was at 61st and Urbana. Brown Airport was at 51st and Sheridan. Both were busy places for pilot pilots and corporate airplanes. The tale of these 2 airport is re-told by Jack Frank. This clip is from his 1990s documentary "Stuff That's Gone" . Interviewed are late Tulsans Red Stevenson and Faye Sullenger.
Jack Frank maintains a large collection of historic films of Tulsa and Oklahoma dating back to the 1920s.

It just astounds me to realize that Tulsa was such a major destination at that time that it could support that many airports. Truly an amazing time in Tulsa’s history.

I miss Red. I used to sell him airplane parts when I worked for Butler Aviation at TIA. He gave me an autographed copy of his book " Up, Up and Away"

I remember flying in to Brown airport in the 50's with my Dad. He belonged to "Oklahoma Airmen" flying club. You should have mentioned another airport on north Lewis just south of 66th Street North, it was appropriately named "Tulsa North". We flew in and out of there many times. Our home airport was "Harvey Young" airport between 11th Street and 21st Street and between 129th East Avenue and 145th East Avenue. I believe it is still there.

Thanks, great memories. If I have my facts straight, one of my father's friends was killed on take off in a twin engine private plane out of Commercial airport in Tulsa. The man and several others were flying to Ohio for an airshow. They crashed a short distance from the end of the runway, never gained much altitude.Must have been in the early 1950s.

Was the area that had been Brown Airport used as a driving range for a while? I seem to recall going out there with my dad in the early 'sixties, and he practiced his golf swing.
