The Japanese were responsible for massive atrocities and were prepared to arm every man, woman, and child with spears to defend their nation from invasion. They would do whatever the Emperor commanded. 2 bombs that killed 226,000 probably saved a million lives on both sides. It was horrific. That level of horrific... is also why it was the last time (so far) that nuclear weapons have been used in war.

In this case it does, because they were saving the lives of the Japanese. The atrocities done by the Japanese Imperial Army to the Okinawans still linger to this day. Also Hiroshima was a military town, it was a naval supply port and the only residential area was where the Peace Park is, the rest was warehouses, military bases, and the ammunition factories. The factories have only recently been acknowledged, as approx. 50000 Korean slave labour were manning them. The biggest casualty was the Koreans abducted and used to run the factories for the Imperial war machine. The source for this is the Peace Museum, Hiroshima. Japan has acknowledged that they had set up drills for people to kill themselves, established systems to force the population to fight and die for every metre of land: because they were terrified of the retribution for the acts they had committed . And of course you know about the biological and chemical weapons that Japan had developed - weaponised anthrax, etc.

Hundreds of thousands died from napalm in Tokyo, far more than the nuclear bombs. The bombing of Dresden as well. That was the cost of total war, and it's why General Sherman said "war is hell."

I love your statement that words relating to nuclear catastrophe should "never be spoken." Thousands of years ago the philosopher Plato talked at length about the destructive effects of irresponsible speech, gossip, the use of language when it is superfluous. He understood that irresponsible speech itself is destructive because it reduces the value and meaning of all forms of expression.

Tucker is wrong. The cost in American serviceman was estimated as high, 1 million casualties to conventional warfare that would have left Japan bereft of a population. The hardliners ruling the military in Japan refused to surrender. They had mobilised the entire population to fight the Allies. Furthermore, judging a population from almost 100 years ago by today's standards and with hindsight from the comfort of a cushie couch is just plain faulty logic.

Agreed. Imperial Japan was brutal, determined, and merciless. They were leaders who used their own people as Kamikaze's. They had little respect for the lives of their citizenry and were torturous of those who opposed them. It took something huge, and even worse, it took 2 huge things to get their surrender. They were days apart, and it took two bombings, not one.

Even the first strike would be in Honolulu others would follow fast. Then we were told to stand down and things were going to go on as usual. I had to check my shorts for an explosion and the Brandy was half gone.

I think it's easy for us today to question and villainize the dropping of the Japan bombs because we have decades of context. At the time of that bombing, we didn't. What we knew was that Japan was the enemy and hundreds of thousands of Americans would die if we resorted to a land invasion, and Japan had vowed to fight to the last man. Also consider that the decision to bomb them was a not one made in a vacuum and was considered long and hard before it happened. Universally, we take the anti-nuke position because we know what they will do, and we know this because of WWII Japan. I know the whole world hates the US just a little, but is it possible that we all understand the horror of nuclear warfare and guard ourselves against it so rabidly because of those bombings? Just sort of thinking out loud, here. Nothing I've completely thought through. I hope everyone has a great day!

I agree that atomic and especially nuclear weapons are bad. What people don't understand is that the NUCLEAR weapons we have today are orders of magnitude more powerful than the ATOMIC weapons we used back then. People live in Nagasaki and Hiroshima today. If we had used nuclear weapons like the ones we have today, I don't think people could be living there. Additionally, some of the reasons we used the atomic bombs on the Japanese is because the Japanese people, particularly the Emperor at the time, would NOT accept any surrender request we made of them. At the time, it was estimated that it would have cost a MILLION American lives to invade Japan and TENS of MILLIONS of Japanese civilian lives. Not to mention all the beautiful and ancient cultural landmarks and buildings that would have been utterly destroyed all over Japan. We didn't have smart bombs then, it was carpet bombing of cities because that's all the technology of the time would allow. As bad as the atomic bombs were, they were actually the best option we had at the time. I know that is probably an unpopular opinion, but when all the other facts are taken into account, that was actually the MOST humane way we could have ended the war. Last point, and this will be even more unpopular but I don't care, WE DIDN'T PICK THAT FIGHT, THEY DID!!

Tucker really doesn't know what he's talking about. And it's not everyone's individual duty to reject someone's authority- especially if you're in the military. I'm an historian, having taught at a university, and a 22 year Air Force vet. People can talk about it until you're blue in the face and others, like myself who have lived it, just might have a different perspective. In actuality the military, at least in the Air Force, we were trained to think things through by getting the facts, to problem solve, to acknowledge bias, because you always perform better knowing the root of any problem. Wishful thinking can get you killed.

The ignorance on display here is breathtaking. 100,000 people died in one night conventional bombing of Dresden and Tokyo- just as dead as nuclear bombing. And if Japan was ready to surrender- why didnt they after Hiroshima? And two weeks later (and being notified by the Allies) when Nagasaki was bombed? If they were ready to surrender, why did the Japanese military stage a rebellion when the emperor decided to surrender after the allies said they had unlimited atomic weapons they would continue to drop (they were bluffing they had zero more weapons and no more fissile materials). It was literally only the threat of continuous nuclear bombing that made Japan surrender, saving millions of Japanese lives. I lived there for several years- there's a reason Americans are still loved to this day by the Japanese

I know my grandmothers and grandfathers and great uncles and aunts would have taken exception to Tuckers analysis if they were still alive. They would have had to go into Japan and possibly have been part of the many names that would have had to die or kill thousands more Japanese to survive. Tuckers idea would seem evil and selfish to that generation and my deceased family members because they would have had to face more war and more death while he sits in the present benefiting from the millions who lived and died in WW2. They had to make those hard decisions and to live with the effects of that war we can judge in hindsight maybe in the future his sentiments might apply but likely not in this case.

Where is Tulsi Gabbard a legal resident? She says she is a proud Samoan, woman of color, former member of the Hawaiian National Guard, now assigned to an Army Reserve Unit in CA, owns a house in Texas. She is introduced on air as member of the Army Reserve but doesn't speak for the Army. Her original deployment to Iraq was as a Health Care Specialist. She changes her explanations like you change your ward robe.

Tulsi is correct. I respect her and think that the media and the two candidates minimize her wisdom. Plus she is the only one that have served in the armed services and still is serving

I was saying that in 1963 when we were stationed in Japan. Why? War is ugly, but killing everybody for the sins of a few? That when I stoped designing weapons and started dreaming of toys!

I was about to start my first class of the semester in carpentry which was a finish carpentry class when it happened. About to take roll call and one guys phone had reception cause concrete building got the alert. Me being an army combat veteran knew I had no chance of running. Told everybody call your loved ones. Guys raced and drove off. I was about to head to 7-11 for one more beer.

I remember that morning walking to my coffee pot for my 1st cup when phone calls came in from my 4 children asking is it real and what we all should do My only reply after a long pause Was to Start Praying … 🙏 we only had time for that there was no escape no place to run with zero time how far can anyone get in 15 minutes ??? Oh and by the way we are on an island! The way our Local government handled that alert is the same way our President Handles his office! In fact it was Tulsi that sent out Blast Text to the media after she found out the truth of the matter of bringing false alarm, She calmed down the entire state from going nuts .. while our Governor of the state was sleeping

When Gorbachev took power in the USSR, the military leader came to show him the process for firing nuclear weapons and he refused, he said he couldn't imagine any conceivable situation where he would do that.

What Tulsi Gabbard was saying is patently obvious. Do you think a North Korea for example, feeling its power and tyranny over its people under any threat, would think the same thing?

I personally think Trump should pick Tulsi to be his VP if he does I believe he will be the greatest president ever she brings common sense to the table and I believe she can keep him balanced. She can keep him on course.

Decision to use nuclear bombs is based on more than one factor. It is more than anyone’s personal moral standards. Saying nuclear weapons will wipe all living things and also say dropping nuclear bomb over civilians is not right is meaningless because with such powerful weapon, there is no choice. The overwhelming decision is how your enemy think and do. All other considerations are purely academic. That is also why most (I hope) nuclear countries possess them, because they are not sure what others will do.

The fact that the purpose of nuclear weapons can also be defensive. Maybe those 1000’s inialated will be the enemy, not us. Ronald Reagan also said “Peace through Strength”.

I was in Hawaii, working as a safety manager on a 38 story apartment building in downtown Honolulu after a fire had destroyed three floors and fire suppression efforts destroyed all the floors below that floor and the smoke destroyed all the floors above that floor. Nuclear disaster is not something that we had really prepared for as a Construction safety manager so I had to quickly Google in the 20 minutes that we had until the bomb was supposed to arrive what we should do was find a tall building concrete structure go to the 10th floor to the center of the building away from any windows. A crew of about 60 of us did that and one guy lived on the other side of the Alawai Canal And his girlfriend was home at the time so he told us that he’s not gonna stay there and die with us. He’d rather go spend the last remaining minutes with his girlfriend. So he jumped on his skateboard and rode across the bridge to his apartment. I’m not gonna lie. It was a little scary, it was very surreal. There was so little time to consider options that it didn’t seem like reality had set in. The annoying, frustrating thing was that there was no real plan in place and no place to seek shelter, and nothing has been done about it since to my knowledge.
