It’s a very good project idea, which could benefit Africans socially, economically and politically too. I wish it comes true. There should be an agreement with the related African countries to assign a single body to manage this project from both technical and financial aspects. This body should comprise of representatives from all respective countries involved and it should be organized under AU to lead it as an owner till its completion. Financing shall be negotiated with a financing body (preferably Chinese Government) by this body which is under the AU.

This is what Africa needs. Not huge highways. Build a railway system with the speed 200 km/h or lower. Higher speeds will be to expensive. Focus mostly on the freight because that's what makes the money for maintenance and for improving the network. Get a good night train network for long journeys between countries. When this network is made with good quality and is profitable they should get high speed rail(300+ km/h) where it’s needed. And don’t… just don’t let the Chinese build anything. I dislike a lot about them, I especially dislike that they like to fill their country with concrete pillars everywhere for railway. I would like to see a railway network with the average EU quality connecting North to South, East to West in Africa. If they did this it would be amazing.

alot of what you said was right except your hate for the chinese way of building rails. They use the concrete pillars to save land area and habitat, lower cost of building railways and also keep the trains at a constant grade to make sure they can run at higher speeds. Africa actually needs to rely on China to build railways because they cn actually build railway at the lowest cost in the world. It cost 15 million for China to build 1 mile of railway. 15 million is half as cheap as EU cost to build 1 mile of railway (EU costs 30 million for 1 mile of railway)

I can agree & disagree. Actually, there are always some sections profitable even for HSR. Instead of Aviation, HSR would work on high density traffic. On the other hand Conventional railway is good for both. With technical upgradation conventional railway can become semi high speed with ⅓ or ¼ investment. It would be good for both, passenger & freight. But focus should be on freight.

I understand your sentiment, but let's just see what happens with this project. We know a lot of money disappears into the pockets of highly placed officials. A lot of savings can made if this is truly transparent. My question is this rail link crosses a lot areas violent rebellion. How do they plan to secure the line through these areas? There are conflicts on Sudan, Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Nigeria and Cameroon. This will be a challenge.

Some of you are just on this earth to complain. You are professional complainants. On the videos about African continental roads: you complained that you wanted hyperloop instead, bullet trains instead and you wanted the roads to be painted white to avoid global warming and heat, you said the roads were bad for that reason alone, the road is a debt trap, not wide enough or demarcated enough or didn't go through your small tiny obscure village or town. Now On the video of the trans African rail: you said you want slower, older trains instead of this normal trains or high speed trains what happened to those requests for hyperloop and bullet trains from the videos about the roads?, you said you want cargo trains instead of passenger trains, you said you want your country men to build it even though you do not have any university of transportation or university or any institution at all that teaches anything about train and railway manufacturing, operations and maintenance in your entire country (except for Nigeria and south Africa I do not know of other African countries that teach anything about rail or trains) Look we have Nothing, I mean NOTHING, so anything at all will be a plus whether it is passenger train, bullet train, highs speed train, cargo train, hyperloop or whatever it shouldn't be our problem for now. We should just have something and whatever we have we should use it well, manege it well and appreciate it, I'm sure that allt of people will benefit from this things the road and rail, we don't have to wait until we have mag Lev trains before we start using them, there is nothing that says we cannot develop or we cannot feel the impact of 5rain network except it is mag Lev train ask yourself do you have the passengers to keep the train running? You can't spend money on the latest most expensive, highest capacity trains without knowing how profitable those trains will be to you especially not on borrowed money It's the same for the roads Nigeria made its portion of the African highway 4lanes and 6 lanes and demarcated/dualised the roads to prevent colotion from on coming traffic this is reasonable because Nigeria has the population to use 6lanes and they have the money to build it. You can't build 6 lane highways in Western Sahara or some other parts of Africa with less population and road traffic and less financial strength. So we should be happy that the roads exist any country who wants to upgrade the part that crosses through their country should feel free to do so. Also In future we can talk about UPGRADING these things or building more if the need arises and we have the money to do so. For now global warming should not even be out concern we should leave that for USA, China, Germany, UK and co. Who are responsible for over 90% of all green house gas emissions. We should appreciate the continental road in future when we have more money we can paint the road white, add bicycle lanes, pedestrian bridges and crossings and all that What many if you are doing in these comments section now seems to me like when; we as a people have no house to sleep in we are homeless and somehow we get money to buy a house but becausesome of us don't like the colour of one house we don't buy it, the next house a few people don't like the curtains so we don't buy that either and then the last house 2 people don't like the landscaping so we refuse to take any of the available houses and sleep in the streets, not the streets with park benches and cool whether, I mean the streets with mosquitoes, un-tarred African red mud, kind of streets with possiblity of some wild animals biting you while you sleep and 100% chance of getting malaria and typhoid within a few days on these kind of streets. You know what I think? We should buy the house, pass the night and in it by morning we worry about changing the curtains, the paint and doing the landscaping. Do not throw the baby away with the bath water my friends, always be considerate, these roads (trans African highway were conceived and thought of in the 1960's before Elon musk and PayPal or his Tesla and space X and hyperloop, also the trans African rail too was not an idea of today these things took years to get funding alone. So the technology obviously will be that of the time. But it doesn't mean it's totally useless or will not contribute anything at all to us as Africans. I can already tell you journeys will be safer by train, goods will be cheaper in certain places in Africa where the train and the roads connect, time spent on the road will be cut short, already some KZbinrs have driving on many of these roads like Tendris world I'm not sure I spelt that right but I got to know him from Juliet of blaxit. He's journey to Africa and around Africa would have been impossible without those roads so many good things are already coming out from the roads and rails. As for finance or funding Remember Nigeria, south Africa, Egypt, Morocco and maybe Tunisia are responsible for about 90% of funds in ALL African Union projects and for projects like these they needed more input but instead of waiting for South Sudan, Somalia, Djibouti and co. to become rich it's better we take loans from African development Bank, and a few others willing to put their money behind the project and instead of doing trial and error or learn how to build roads or rails in the desert with brand new 2 year old universities of transportation in Africa that is yet to graduate anyone, it's better we rely on experts from China or elsewhere and instead have those our students shadow them. Put your ego's aside and face reality.

The only true way to make such projects work for Africa is to ensure that everything, from design to manufacturing to production of every single part required for this railway system is created in-house of Africa and that nothing is outsourced to foreign corporations, foreign territories or manufacturers. Africa should have by now come to the understanding that the more it imports the more dependent it is on colonial type commerce and that keeping everything homegrown is the only way to ensure proper functioning, mantainance through training, education which will ensure shared empowerment for the largest cross section of every part of African societal development.

It should learn from China: squeeze as much tech transfer as possible. I'm half-Chinese and I find this fair: China did the same thing with Western companies. For the first few thousand km it won't be possible for Africa to build everything by itself, but Africa is big. It's huge! The next 100,000 km, Africa should aim to build by itself.

Not everything has to be domestic. In my own country, America, we are trying to build a 320 kmh railroad in California. The French offered to help us, but we insisted on doing it in-house. As a result, the process is far more expensive and time consuming, owing to the lack of expertise on this kind of project. Learn from those with experience and then go domestic.

It is a good idea however, how long will that railroad be on working condition ? How long will it last ? It will traverse various countries, on the way, and how will maintenance be done and by whom ? Do you know africa at all ? While it is knew it will generate interest by all, but it will soon loose interest to the people because it costs money and if it costs money, corruption will be a serious problem . Every day the Chinese Railway Company is loosing 50 Million USD mainly because of the extensive high speed railway network. The debt accumulated so far is 950 Billion USD. The will bancrupt unless the Chinese government will step in.

All these so-called environmentalists make me laugh. Yes natural habitats for animals will be affected along the way, that's inevitable. What they should be more concerned about, not only in this case, but in all other such cases, present and future, is to lobby the government's for some kind of damage control and ways to find a counter balance to the loss of habitat....
