My favorite song of all time. Almost like a solitary, reflexive writing, directed or turned back on oneself-- very self-investigative, attuned and sensitive, and very very simple and.... funny. The heroine is fully alive and present to her own strangeness and the strangeness of her predicament ("I don't love you but this and that keeps happening to me...") and through that, she understands something of the world. She has a really vast consciousness of herself and the world around her and all of that through allowing herself the experience of love, while not pushing herself to be consciously "in love" necessarily (what someone else has pointed out as a necessary denial). These lyrics required something else, something other than the beaten paths in poetry so pervasive otherwise. And that made me realize that this is a film and here the songs and indeed the characters are only as good as the director. Just like we are only as good/beautiful as the person who sees us. Very cleverly, I guess the lyricist also makes us see how he doesn't think this is love; all of these symptoms- they are not love. They really are not. All of this is something else, perhaps a yearning for a thing that is a thing only by virtue of the yearning for it- a reality one thinks one would like while not the reality itself. In the film the heroine realizes this too in her own way. So yes this song is as apt as the film's imagination of the emotional world of the female lead and her experience of herself and others, as it slowly shifts and changes.
