This is the final climactic chapter in the defeat of Rommel's Afrika Korps told in an epic, wide ranging presentation full of memorable scenes. An American-British feature length co-production in very good black and white film, which I digitally restored. Told through a combination of striking footage, high powered narration by Burgess Meridith and others, extensive captured German film and first hand accounts from the participants. Terrific film. It must have been a real tonic for the audiences watching it during the war. North Africa was where the tide of the war turned for the allies in the west. I have always wondered about how the local arab peoples viewed the to and fro of these great armies across their lands. There were a lot of what seemed to be French settlers welcoming the allies liberating them from the Germans, I suppose most of them would have left over the next 20 years.

A few facts. The approx 100,000 Germans captured at Tunisia were the result of the Enigma decrypts at Bletchly Park, which provided the British Navy and RAF with the time and place to destroy about 80% of all re-supply efforts from Italy. Check it yourself. !00,000 Germans, adequately supplied, could have held off three times their number. Tunisia was indeed a great achievement for the Allies, but it's fair to say the Africa Corps was not defeated on the battlefield - it was starved into submission. Trucks and tanks were abandoned for lack of fuel, positions were abandoned for lack of ammunition. They had no choice but to surrender. A tremendous testiment to the power of Intelligence.

Western Allied forces in Tunisia captured more Germans than the Soviets at Stalingrad. Winston Churchill was correct about Italy been the soft under belly of Europe. Just 15 days after the invasion of Sicily, Mussolini regime collapse in Italy. Western forces invaded the Italian mainland without a problem. Germany's Military was forced to invade Italy and divert forces from the Eastern Front to reinforce Balkans, France.

Not just the Afrikakorps were destroyed, but also Panzer Army 5. Many of the German forces we see in this film are not from the Afrikakorps.

Western Allied forces in Tunisia captured more Germans than the Soviets at Stalingrad, with far fewer allied casualties.

Just heard what was supposed to be Patton's voice. It was too low and manly. Patton had a high pitched voice which all most sounded like a woman's voice which gave him an inferiority complex. Guess Patton's real voice wouldn't sound good in a propaganda movie.

@@David-Zita I totally agree, I'm just regretting the loss of all fabulous military inventions that set role model for the world.

Like what? Gas chambers? Prat. The capture of enigma and code breaking st Bletchley surpassed all so called German inventions. Inventions, like Hollywood created of the Yanks capturing Enigma before the Brits.
